Polène Cyme Tote Guide: Two Shapes, Laptop Fit, Nano vs Tote

The Polène Cyme Tote is the large, laptop-friendly member of the Cyme family: 47 x 37 x 11 cm, 726 g, in textured Italian calf, with two handle lengths so it goes from hand to shoulder. Its party trick is that it takes two shapes, an open basket and a closed, folded “flower”, and the Cyme Tote Nano shrinks the same idea to 25.5 x 20 x 9 cm with a shoulder strap.

Polène is the Paris leather-goods house founded in 2016 by Antoine Mothay with his siblings Mathieu and Elsa Mothay, and its bags are made by leather artisans in Ubrique, Andalusia, Spain. If you already know the smaller handbag version, our Polène Cyme guide covers the original; this piece is about the tote, how it behaves day to day, and which size to pick.

What the Polène Cyme Tote is

The name comes from the French “cime”, meaning a peak, the crest of a mountain, for the ridge that runs along the top of the bag. Polène describes the Cyme Tote as a bag designed for city life and for carrying a computer, and that is how it reads in the hand: a broad, soft-walled carryall rather than a structured briefcase.

The leather is certified textured full-grain Italian calf, and the inside is lined in velvet microfibre, which feels plush against the hand when you are rummaging for keys. There is one interior pocket and a magnetic closure. The handles come in two lengths, 13 cm for the hand and elbow, 29.6 cm for the shoulder, even over a wool coat.

At 726 g empty it is light for its size. The Numéro Un handbag, by comparison, is 925 g.

The two shapes: open basket and closed flower

This is the detail most people ask about, and it is simpler in person than it sounds. Worn as an open basket, the sides are left open and the straps sit on the outside, so the bag opens wide like a market basket. It is ideal at a desk where a laptop goes in and out all day.

Worn as a closed flower, you tuck the sides in and let the straps cross inside the bag. The silhouette pulls in, the opening narrows, and the leather folds into petal-like curves. This version suits trains: the narrower opening keeps things in, and it looks neater with tailoring.

Switching takes seconds and needs no hardware.

Does a laptop fit in the Cyme Tote?

Polène designed the Cyme Tote to carry a computer, and at 47 cm wide and 37 cm tall it takes a slim laptop lying flat against the back wall. Beside it there is room for an A4 notebook, a phone, a cardholder, keys, sunglasses and a small umbrella. The 11 cm depth suits documents and a jumper more than a packed lunch.

Because the interior has a single pocket, small things roam. A Sierra Pouch in Duo Taupe keeps cables and lipstick together, and a Neiti Card Holder in Duo Camel keeps cards easy to find by touch. Our guide to Polène wallets and card holders lists the other small leather pieces that sit well inside.

Cyme Tote vs Cyme Tote Nano vs Cyme vs Cyme Mini

Model Size (W x H x D) Weight How it is carried
Cyme Tote 47 x 37 x 11 cm 726 g Hand, elbow, shoulder (13 cm and 29.6 cm handles)
Cyme Tote Nano 25.5 x 20 x 9 cm 296 g Hand, elbow, shoulder (9.6 cm handle plus shoulder strap)

The Cyme Tote is the work and travel size. The Cyme Tote Nano keeps the ridge and the folding character but at under 300 g; it holds a phone, cardholder, keys and sunglasses, with no room for a laptop. Its 9.6 cm handle is for the hand, and the shoulder strap turns it into an everyday bag for evenings and weekends.

The original Cyme in Camel is the original handbag shape, in the same textured Italian calf with a velvet microfibre lining, and the Cyme Mini in Sand is the compact version. If you are choosing between the handbag and the tote, ask one question: does a computer come with you most days? If yes, the tote; if not, the original Cyme is the more versatile everyday shape. Our Polène bag sizes guide compares every model side by side.

Cyme Tote colours

The Cyme Tote in Black is the most searched colour and the easiest to work with every day: the texture of the calf keeps it from looking flat, and it hides marks from desks and train seats. For a warmer neutral, the Cyme Tote in Camel is the one I would pick with navy and grey tailoring, and the Cyme Tote in Taupe is the softest grey-brown, very forgiving with both black and cream.

The darker autumn shades are where the tote looks richest. The Cyme Tote in Ebony reads as a deep chocolate, the Cyme Tote in Black Cherry is a wine-dark red that works as a neutral, and the Cyme Tote in Smoky Olive is a muted green that sits beautifully with camel coats. Brighter still are the Cyme Tote in Terracotta and the Cyme Tote in Linden, the latter a fresh, pale green.

The Nano comes in the same family of colours. The Cyme Tote Nano in Black and the Cyme Tote Nano in Camel are the classic pair, the Cyme Tote Nano in Taupe is the quiet option, and the Cyme Tote Nano in Ebony and Cyme Tote Nano in Black Cherry bring the darker palette into a small bag. For a pop of colour, try the Cyme Tote Nano in Terracotta and the Cyme Tote Nano in Linden. How to wear the Cyme Tote

On the shoulder, with the 29.6 cm handles, the tote sits under the arm and against the hip. It works over a trench in spring and over a chunky knit in winter, and the long handles leave enough room for a coat collar. In the closed flower shape it looks sharp with a straight-leg trouser and loafers.

In the hand, on the 13 cm handles, it reads more like a leather basket: try it open with a slip skirt and a fine-gauge jumper at the weekend.

The Nano works best on the shoulder strap with denim and a blazer, and on the short handle in the evening with a dress. To compare it with other shapes, browse the Polène tote bags overview and the wider edit of designer tote bags.

Caring for a Cyme Tote

Polène says its bags need little maintenance. Keep the tote away from long spells of direct light and heat, and from water, grease and perfume. If it gets caught in the rain, dab it with a soft cloth and let it air dry; no cream is needed. Dark and new clothes, raw denim especially, can transfer dye onto paler leathers such as Taupe and Linden. Do not overfill it, and store it in its dust bag. Polène offers a repair service at cost. Our Polène leather guide explains how textured calf ages compared with the smooth leathers.

The Cyme Tote around the world

United States

The Cyme Tote’s laptop size makes it a natural commuter bag in New York, where the brand lists boutiques on Broadway and in SoHo, and a space on Oak Street in Chicago has been leased. Black and camel carry through every season.

United Kingdom

The brand lists a boutique in London. British weather argues for the closed flower shape, which keeps rain off the contents,, and Taupe and Ebony suit the long grey months.

France

Paris is home to Polène’s flagship on Rue de Richelieu and a boutique on the Champs-Élysées. The tote looks most Parisian by hand on the short handles, over a navy coat.

Germany and Europe

The brand lists boutiques in Hamburg on Neuer Wall, Milan on Via Manzoni, and Copenhagen. Cold winters favour the long handles and the closed shape; Milan’s dressier offices suit Black Cherry.

Japan

Tokyo’s Minami-Aoyama boutique was the brand’s first in Asia, opened in 2023. On packed trains the Nano on its shoulder strap is the practical choice.

Australia

Seasons run the other way, so the Cyme Tote’s paler shades, Linden and Terracotta, come into their own in the warmer months. In strong sun, keep it out of direct light, as Polène advises.

Canada

Long, snowy winters mean coats, and the 29.6 cm handles are long enough to sit over a parka. Dab off snow and let the leather air dry.
