Polène Black Bags: Which Black Polène to Buy, Smooth vs Textured

The best black Polène bag for most people is the Numéro Dix, a 386 g zipped shoulder bag with two straps, followed by the Cyme for a roomier handbag and the Numéro Un Nano for a small top-handle crossbody. Choose textured black calf if you want a bag that hides scuffs, and smooth black if you prefer a cleaner, slightly glossier finish that shows the folds more sharply.

Polène, the Paris house founded in 2016 by Antoine, Mathieu and Elsa Mothay, makes its bags in Ubrique, Spain, and black runs through almost every model it offers. Below I go model by model; for the wider palette, our Polène bags by colour guide covers every shade.

Why a black Polène bag works so hard

Polène’s design language is sculptural: folded and curved leather, with very little visible branding beyond a small embossed logo and, on some models, a branded clasp. In black, those folds become the whole story. A black bag also forgives what a pale one will not. Dark and new clothes can transfer dye onto light leather, which is not a worry with black, and the textured versions keep their good looks through daily commuting.

If you only buy one Polène, black goes with the most outfits. If you already own a camel and a taupe, black is the natural third.

Which black Polène bag to buy, model by model

Numéro Dix: the everyday answer

The Numéro Dix in Black measures 24 x 20 x 7.5 cm and weighs 386 g. It comes with two straps, a 138 cm long strap for crossbody wear and a 106 cm short strap for the waist and a baguette-style carry under the arm, and it zips shut. It holds a phone, cardholder, keys, sunglasses and a small umbrella. The Numéro Dix in Textured Black is the version I would choose for daily use. For something smaller, the Numéro Dix Micro in Black takes a phone and cards, and the Numéro Dix Galop in Black is a variation on the shape. More detail is in our Numéro Dix guide.

Cyme: the handbag with room

The Cyme is cut from textured Italian calf with a velvet microfibre lining, and in black the ridge along its top reads almost architectural. The Cyme in Textured Black is the core version; the Cyme in Textured Black with Ecru Stitching traces the folds in a pale thread, which shows off the construction beautifully. The Cyme Mini in Black is the compact option. If you need a laptop bag, the Cyme Tote in Black is 47 x 37 x 11 cm and designed to carry a computer; our Cyme Tote guide explains its two shapes.

Numéro Un Nano: the small classic

The Numéro Un was Polène’s first bag and remains one of its bestsellers, and the Nano is often cited as the house’s top seller. The Numéro Un Nano in Black is the smooth version; the Numéro Un Nano in Textured Black is grainier and tougher looking. The full-size Numéro Un in Black measures 32 x 16.5 x 23 cm at 925 g, with an adjustable 120 cm strap, three interior pockets (one zipped) and a back pocket. The Numéro Un Micro in Black is the tiniest. Our Numéro Un guide compares all four sizes.

Tonca: black for evenings

The Tonca in Textured Black is 17 x 24 x 7 cm, 366 g, with a strap that adjusts from 32 to 59 cm, so it sits on the shoulder long and tucks under the arm short like a baguette. A gold-plated stainless steel buckle and velvet microfibre lining make it the dressiest black Polène. See our Tonca guide for how it wears.

Soft black shoulder bags: Neyu, Osmo, Nodde

For softer leather, the Neyu in Black is a long east-west shoulder bag, 40 x 15 x 8 cm and 350 g, in smooth Dutch nappa calf with a zip on the back. The Osmo in Black is 25.5 x 12 x 5.5 cm, 380 g, also in Dutch nappa, with a flap that closes on two hidden magnets and a strap that shortens to baguette length. The Nodde in Black is a zipped 21 x 16.5 x 7 cm crossbody at 430 g, and the Nodde Hobo in Black scales the idea up to 26 x 28 x 6 cm with a 52 to 105 cm strap. Our Neyu guide goes deeper.

Bigger black bags: Mokki, Numéro Neuf, Shuldo

The Mokki in Black has two compartments and measures 24.5 x 32.5 x 11 cm. The Numéro Neuf East West in Black is a zipped shoulder bag at 32 x 37 x 13.5 cm and 540 g. Biggest of all is the Shuldo in Black, a slouchy 49 x 56 x 10 cm hobo in textured Spanish calf that wraps under the arm. The Boky in Textured Black sits between them, three assembled pouches in one 26 x 18 x 11 cm bag. To compare these with other houses, browse our designer shoulder bags.

Smooth black vs textured black

Polène uses several leathers, and in black the difference is easy to see. Textured full-grain Italian calf, used on the Cyme and on the textured Numéro Un and Numéro Dix, has a pebbled surface that diffuses light and hides fine scratches. Smooth full-grain calf has a cleaner, slightly reflective finish; the folds look crisper but a fingernail mark shows sooner. Smooth Dutch nappa, on the Neyu and Osmo, is the softest to the touch, with a fine sheen, and Polène notes it is lightly processed, so a little natural roughness may show.

My rule: textured for a bag you will use every day and put down on floors and café tables, smooth for a bag you want to look sharp in the evening. The full breakdown is in our Polène leather guide.

How to style a black Polène bag

Black with black is the easiest look, and the folds give an all-black outfit some shape. A black Numéro Dix on its long strap with a grey coat, white shirt and jeans is the easiest outfit to repeat all week. With camel and cream, a black Cyme adds weight to a soft palette; with navy, the Tonca’s gold buckle lifts it. For a small accent, a Neiti Card Holder in Duo Black keeps the inside of the bag in the same family. For crossbody ideas, see our Polène crossbody bags guide.

Caring for black leather

Polène says its bags need little maintenance. Keep a black bag out of prolonged direct light and heat, which can dull the colour, and away from water, grease and perfume. If it gets wet, dab it with a soft cloth and let it air dry; no cream is needed. Do not overfill it, because the folds hold their shape best when the bag is not strained, and store it in its dust bag. Polène offers a repair service at cost.

Black Polène bags around the world

United States

The brand lists boutiques in New York on Broadway and in SoHo, and a Chicago space on Oak Street has been leased. Black suits New York’s year-round dark wardrobes, and the zipped Numéro Dix suits a subway commute.

United Kingdom

Interest in black Polène bags is especially strong in the UK, where the brand lists a London boutique. Textured black handles grey, wet days best; dab off rain and let it dry naturally.

France

Paris has the Rue de Richelieu flagship and a boutique on the Champs-Élysées. A black Numéro Un Nano with a trench is about as Parisian as it gets.

Germany and Europe

The brand lists boutiques in Hamburg on Neuer Wall, Milan on Via Manzoni, and Copenhagen. Northern winters favour the larger black shoulder bags worn over coats; in Milan, the Tonca suits dinner.

Japan

Tokyo’s Minami-Aoyama boutique, opened in 2023, was the brand’s first in Asia. Compact black shapes, the Numéro Dix Micro and the Osmo, suit busy trains.

Australia and Canada

Australia’s strong sun is a reason to keep a black bag out of direct light, while Canada’s long winters make a zipped black crossbody the practical choice under a parka.
