The Frankie Shop vs Toteme: 8 Key Differences in 2026

0

The Frankie Shop is the New York label for oversized, shoulder-led tailoring, while Toteme is the Stockholm house for quieter, archetype wardrobe pieces. Choose Frankie for a statement blazer such as the Gelso Oversized Blazer in Light Taupe Melange; choose Toteme for a calmer, scarf-detailed uniform.

Both labels sit on the same shortlist for women who want polished, neutral clothes that work hard. They answer that brief differently, and the differences show up in the shoulder, the hem and the price tag. If you are still building a wider list, our guide to brands like The Frankie Shop covers the rest of the field.

Who founded The Frankie Shop and who founded Toteme?

The Frankie Shop was founded by Gaelle Drevet in New York, and Toteme was founded by Elin Kling and Karl Lindman.

Drevet is French, from Lyon (FashionUnited, 2022), and worked as a producer and journalist at ABC News before fashion (Grazia UK, 2019). In 2006 she co-founded the Lower East Side boutique Pixie Market with Magda Pietrobelli, and that space later became Frankie, described as “Pixie Market’s older sister”. The brand calls her a “native Francaise-turned-New Yorker”. Our full profile, who is The Frankie Shop, goes deeper on the early years.

Toteme’s own About page states that the label “was founded in 2014 by Elin Kling and Karl Lindman.” Business of Fashion notes that Kling worked in fashion media and built a large following for her blog before the label, while Lindman began as a model and later served as art director at Interview magazine.

When were they founded, and where are they based?

Both labels date to 2014, but one is rooted in New York and the other in Stockholm.

Press dates The Frankie Shop to 2014 (Grazia, FashionUnited), with its Lower East Side doors opening in 2015 by the brand’s own account. It began as a multi-brand concept store (Grazia 2019 notes it also stocked labels such as Nanushka) and its own label grew alongside. The New York flagship is at 59 Crosby Street in SoHo, with Paris stores at 7 and 14 rue Saint Claude in the Marais, a Milan store at Via San Pietro All’Orto 26 and a corner inside Selfridges in London.

Toteme has a slightly different origin story. Business of Fashion reports that the pair launched the label out of New York City in 2014, where they were living at the time, then returned to Stockholm two years later and opened a first flagship there in 2019. The brand now says it designs “from the atelier in Stockholm”. FashionUnited reported that 12 Mount Street in London is its first European store outside Sweden, and WWD covered its first US store at 49 Mercer Street in SoHo, a few streets from Frankie’s Crosby Street flagship.

What are the signature pieces of each brand?

Frankie’s signature is the oversized blazer; Toteme’s is the scarf jacket.

FashionUnited names the founding Frankie pieces as the oversized blazer, the tailored trouser and the oxford shirt, and Marie Claire UK (July 2020) reported that “the Eva tee and Bea blazer are bestsellers”. On Coveti today that heritage runs through the Bea Blazer in Chocolate ($670), with its boxy silhouette and peak lapels, the Gelso Pleated Twill Trousers in Black ($450) and the Viper Leather Jacket in Black ($1,310). Our edit of The Frankie Shop blazers compares every cut in stock.

For Toteme, WWD reported that the embroidered scarf jacket is a bestseller that “has become a Toteme signature”, and its runway coverage refers to the “viral scarf jacket”. FashionUnited (June 2026) adds a leather-trimmed shearling jacket, the striped turtleneck, monogram silk pyjama sets and the T-Lock bag to the list of pieces the brand is known for.

How do the aesthetics differ?

Frankie reads as downtown and shoulder-forward, and Toteme reads as Scandinavian and pared back.

The Frankie Shop says the label “became synonymous with smart, oversized suiting”. The look is a big blazer, a long coat and a slouchy trouser, often in one tone, with enough volume that the outline does the talking. New pieces this season keep that energy: the Rufina Double Breasted Faux Leather Jacket in Black ($840) and the Brea Collarless Coat in Burgundy ($980), which is cut oversized with padded shoulders.

Toteme describes its approach as “emblematic designs with an emphasis on materiality and shape”, with “archetype pieces” in “authentic materials, rich textures and graphic silhouettes”. FashionUnited sums the label up as known for its minimalist aesthetic. In practice, the Toteme look is more about texture and proportion than about a dramatic shoulder.

Which brand runs bigger, and how does the fit compare?

The Frankie Shop builds volume into most pieces, so the cut itself is the statement.

Many Frankie pieces are labelled “Oversized fit”, although the brand’s per-product fit line sometimes reads “Fit: True to size”. Sizes run in letters from XXS to XL, with some styles in XXL and some paired sizes such as XS/S and M/L. The brand’s chart maps XS, S, M, L and XL to UK 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14. For the Bea Blazer, the model is 179cm (5 ft 10) and wears size S. The brand gives no general advice to size down, even though some retailers suggest it for the Bea.

We have not found a reliable published fit rule for Toteme, so we will not invent one. For both labels, check the size guide on each Coveti product page, and contact Coveti if you are between sizes.

Where are the clothes made, and what are they made from?

Frankie’s country of production varies by piece, and the Coveti product page lists it for every item.

Early Frankie pieces were produced in South Korea (FashionUnited, 2022), and the Bea Blazer is still made there. The new arrivals show a wider spread. The Eymi Technical Trench Coat in Black ($870) is 100% polyamide made in South Korea. The Veda Oversized Zip-Up Cardigan in Brown ($660) is 100% wool made in China. The Dune Stretch Leather Panelled Pants in Black ($1,280) are lamb leather made in India, and the Gina Fur Bomber Jacket in Black ($3,110) is lamb fur made in Turkiye.

Toteme does not publish a single production country on its About page, so check each product listing. Fair Wear lists Toteme Studio AB, based in Stockholm, as a member since 2021, which is a useful signal if factory standards matter to you. Which should you buy, The Frankie Shop vs Toteme?

Buy The Frankie Shop if you want the jacket to make the outfit, and Toteme if you want the whole outfit to stay quiet.

  • Pick Frankie for oversized tailoring, long coats and leather with attitude. Start with a blazer, then add the coat that matches its shoulder.
  • Pick Toteme for a uniform of scarf-detailed outerwear, knits and accessories that read calm from across the room.
  • Mix the two. A Frankie blazer over a Toteme knit is a sensible pairing, because both labels lean on neutral colour.
