The Anna-Karin Karlsson panther sunglasses: Rose et le Rêve and Rose et la Roue

The panther is the Anna-Karin Karlsson frame most people picture: a round acetate front with a brass panther, encrusted in cubic zirconia, prowling along the top of the right lens. There are two of them, and the names confuse everyone. Rose et le Rêve is the oversized one, with a 55 mm lens; Rose et la Roue is the smaller, with a 51 mm lens. Both are made in Italy, both carry the same panther, and between them they come in 8 colourways at Coveti from $2,510 to $2,510.

“The lavishly adorned panther is a symbol of your personal odyssey, a reminder to be bold and pursue your dreams,” the house writes of Rose et le Rêve. “Crafted with exquisite attention to detail, the panther is made from brass and encrusted with cubic zirconia. The flowy temples and bridge are plated in real 24K gold.”

Key facts

  • Rose et le Rêve Sun: oversized round, 55-21-145 mm, 136.7 mm across, 53 g, 5 colourways from $2,510
  • Rose et la Roue Sun: round, 51-24-140 mm, 137.8 mm across, 53 g, 3 colourways from $2,510
  • The panther: cast brass encrusted with cubic zirconia, set by hand; the Diamond Edition of the Rêve carries real diamonds
  • Frame: Italian acetate on stainless steel temples and bridge plated in real 24K gold; Zeiss lenses; made in Italy
  • Colourways: Black Crystal, Caramel, Pearl, Purple, Tobacco, Turquoise

Rêve against Roue

Side by side the difference is the lens: the Rêve’s 55 mm lens makes an oversized round that covers the brow, the Roue’s 51 mm lens a round that sits inside it. The total widths are close, 136.7 against 137.8 mm, so both are medium fits; the Rêve simply reads bigger. Choose the Rêve for a broad face and a statement, the Roue for a smaller face and a frame that can be worn to lunch.

The panther

The house describes it as a symbol of a personal odyssey, “a reminder to be bold and pursue your dreams”, and it is the same casting on both frames: brass, plated, with zirconia set stone by stone. In Ice Crystal it is clear stones on a black frame; in Black Crystal, black stones on black; on the Diamond Edition, real diamonds.

How to wear it

Hair pulled back, a plain neckline, small earrings. The frame is the only animal in the room. The Rêve wants a black dress and a white shirt; the Roue is the one to wear with a T-shirt.

Colourways

Jade, Caramel, Purple, Pearl, Turquoise, Ice Crystal and Black Crystal on the Rêve, with the Black White Diamond Edition on top; Tobacco, Emerald, Pearl, Black Crystal and Ice Crystal on the Roue. The acetate takes colour in depth, so the Jade and the Turquoise are saturated and the Caramel and Tobacco warm and translucent.

The frames

2. Rose et le Rêve Sun Sunglasses in Black Crystal, $2,510

An oversized round acetate frame with the house panther, cast in brass and encrusted with cubic zirconia, stretched along the top of the right lens. 136.7 mm across the front and 53 g, a medium fit that suits most faces. Made in Italy.

“Combining avant-garde design with extravagant materials and immaculate execution, each frame is a piece of art,” the house writes on annakarinkarlsson.com. “The avant-garde designs are executed only through the highest level of handcraft and exclusive materials such as 24k gold, white gold, rosé gold and titanium. Pearls, emerald stones, hand-set crystals and even diamonds decorate the ornate designs.”
