Ateliers Auguste Cléry Wallet: The Slim Bifold, Reviewed

The Ateliers Auguste Cléry is the Paris house’s slim wallet: a flat bifold in Italian calf leather with six card slots and two long compartments for notes and photos, 22.5 x 8 cm when open, made in Portugal and delivered in an Ateliers Auguste box. At Coveti it costs $300 in smooth leather (Black, Navy, Tan and Yellow) and $340 in a deep green croco-embossed calf. It is the least expensive leather piece from a house better known for its structured bags, and the flattest wallet Coveti stocks at the price.

Key facts

  • What it is: a slim bifold wallet, the only wallet Ateliers Auguste makes (the brand’s small leather goods page).
  • Inside: six credit card slots and two compartments for banknotes and photos, as the brand lists them.
  • Size: 22.5 x 8 cm open (8.9 x 3.1 in), so roughly 11 x 8 cm folded.
  • Leather: Italian calf, smooth on Black, Navy, Tan and Yellow; croco-embossed on Green (brand page).
  • Made in Portugal; the brand makes its small leather goods in Porto, its bags in Italy (Ateliers).
  • Price at Coveti on 13 October 2026: $300 smooth, $340 croco-embossed, boxed.

What the Cléry is, and what it is not

It is a classic flat bifold, cut in one leather with no logo plate and no coin pocket. The brand’s own description is plain: six credit card sized compartments, two slots for photos and bank bills, Italian calf, made in Portugal, boxed (Ateliers Auguste product page). There is no zip, no snap and no chain, which is why it stays slim. If you carry coins every day, it is the wrong wallet; if you carry four to six cards and a few notes, it is the right one.

On the Black, Navy and Tan wallets a small Ateliers Auguste mark is stamped low in one corner of the front, tone on tone, so you only see it up close. Open any of them and the name is printed small on the inside. That restraint is the house’s whole approach: the founders describe their design as architectural, with every line given a purpose (see who is Ateliers Auguste).

Every Cléry at Coveti

1. Cléry Slim Wallet in Black Smooth Leather, $300

The one to buy first. Smooth black calf, the mark stamped tone on tone, and it goes with every bag in the range, Gold Edition and Silver Edition alike.

2. Cléry Slim Wallet in Navy Smooth Leather, $300

A dark navy that reads almost black in a bag and blue in daylight. A good choice if you already own a black bag and want the wallet to be findable.

3. Cléry Slim Wallet in Tan Smooth Leather, $300

A warm rust tan, closer to orange than to cognac in person (the brand files it as orange). It pairs with the Tan and Chocolate bags and looks best against black clothes.

4. Cléry Slim Wallet in Yellow Smooth Leather, $300

Lemon yellow, the brightest piece the house makes. Inside a black tote it is the easiest wallet in the world to find, and that is the point of it.

5. Cléry Slim Wallet in Green Croco-Embossed Leather, $340

Forest green croco-embossed calf at $340. The embossing gives depth and hides scratches better than smooth leather, and the colour is the most grown-up of the five.

Size: will it fit your bag?

At 22.5 cm across when open, the Cléry folds to about 11 x 8 cm, a little larger than a credit card in each direction. That fits every Ateliers Auguste bag, including the smallest, the Roquette belt bag, and the Mini Monceau. It also fits a coat pocket and the back pocket of most jeans. If you want something smaller still, a card holder without the note compartments is the answer, and the house does not make one at the moment; our slim wallet guide lists the card holders Coveti stocks from other houses.

Bag Size (H x W x D) Does a Cléry fit?
Roquette 11 x 17 x 4.5 cm Yes, with a phone and keys
Mini Monceau 16 x 20 x 5.5 cm Yes
Mini Amelot 18 x 22 x 8 cm Yes, with room to spare
Marceau 19 x 24 x 7 cm Yes
Sévigné 26 x 47 x 15 cm Yes, alongside a 13 inch laptop

Smooth calf against croco-embossed

The four smooth wallets are plain Italian calf with a soft sheen. They show fine scratches over time, which most owners like, and they darken slightly where the thumb opens them. The green Cléry is calf pressed with a crocodile pattern; it is not exotic skin. The embossing makes it a little stiffer at first and much better at hiding marks. Our leather guide explains how each Ateliers Auguste finish ages.

How it compares

Against the other slim wallets Coveti stocks, the Cléry sits at the accessible end. The Totême T-Lock leather wallet is $580 and closes with the brand’s metal T-Lock; the ATP Atelier Olba wallet is $290; the LOEWE Claw compact wallet is $1,350. The Cléry is the flattest of the four and the only one with no hardware at all. The full comparison goes through each.

Care

The brand’s care advice applies to the wallet as much as the bags: keep it away from heat and prolonged damp, wipe it with a dry soft cloth, and let it dry naturally if it gets wet (Ateliers Auguste care page). Do not overfill the card slots in the first weeks; calf stretches to fit what you put in it, and a slot stretched by three cards stays loose. Every Ateliers Auguste piece carries the house’s one-year guarantee (warranty page).

“Every line must have a purpose. Every volume must be justified,” Laurent Valembert told Style Essentials in March 2026. “We wanted to create a permanent wardrobe of objects.”

Frequently asked questions

How many cards does the Ateliers Auguste Cléry wallet hold?

Six, one per slot, as the brand designs it, plus notes and receipts in the two long compartments. You can fit a second card in a slot, but the leather will stretch to match.

How big is the Ateliers Auguste Cléry wallet?

22.5 x 8 cm open, by the brand’s own measurement, which folds to roughly 11 x 8 cm. It fits every Ateliers Auguste bag including the Roquette belt bag.

Where is the Cléry wallet made?

In Portugal. Ateliers Auguste makes its small leather goods in Porto and its bags in workshops in the Venetian countryside, in Italy.

How much is the Ateliers Auguste Cléry?

$300 at Coveti in smooth calf and $340 in croco-embossed calf, on 13 October 2026, delivered in an Ateliers Auguste box.

Does the Cléry have a coin pocket?

No. It is a flat bifold with card slots and note compartments only, which is what keeps it slim.

Is the green Cléry real crocodile?

No. It is Italian calf leather embossed with a crocodile pattern.

Is the Cléry a good gift?

Yes. It arrives boxed, it suits anyone who carries cards rather than cash, and at $300 it is one of the most accessible pieces the house makes. Our gift guide has more.
