Croc-Embossed Bags: What They Are and the Best to Buy
A croc-embossed bag is calf leather pressed with a heated, engraved plate so its surface takes the scale pattern of crocodile skin. It gives the look of an exotic without the animal, the permits and the price, and the relief hides scratches better than smooth leather does. This autumn Ateliers Auguste released 27 croc- and lizard-embossed Gold Edition bags across 9 models, each made as a limited edition of 100 pieces, at $980 to $1,360 on Coveti. Below: what to look for, and the croc bags worth buying from Ateliers Auguste and its peers.
Key facts
- What it is: bovine leather, calf and cowhide, embossed with a crocodile and lizard scale pattern under heat and pressure (Ateliers Auguste’s embossed leather guide).
- What it is not: real crocodile, which is a protected exotic sold with CITES paperwork and costs many times more.
- Why buy it: the pattern masks the fine scratches that show on smooth calf, and the finish is easy to wipe clean.
- Ateliers Auguste: 27 new embossed bags in black croco, midnight blue croco and burgundy lizard, each limited to 100 pieces (the brand’s limited editions).
- Price at Coveti on 25 October 2026: $980 for the Marceau to $1,360 for the Capucine.
Croc-embossed against real crocodile
The difference is in the hide. Real crocodile is the skin of the animal, cut so the large belly scales run in symmetrical rows, and every bag is slightly different. Croc-embossed leather starts as a smooth calfskin; the pattern is pressed into it, which is why the scales repeat with a regularity no animal produces. Ateliers Auguste describes the process on its own blog: the hide is cleaned, given a base dye, embossed between a heated engraved plate and a counter-plate, then dyed again and finished. The result is a 100% bovine leather that is lighter, tougher and far easier to live with than the real thing.
How to tell a good one: look at the depth of the relief (shallow embossing flattens with wear), at the edges where the leather folds (the pattern should run cleanly over the turn), and at the finish (a soft sheen ages better than a high gloss). On the Ateliers Auguste bags the croco is a glossy black and a deep midnight blue, and the lizard a finer, smaller scale in burgundy.

Higher up, T-Lock croco-embossed clutch in Dark brown ($1,520) and Carryall Tote in Croc Embossed Coffee ($1,190) are the quietest takes, and Barbara bag in croco-embossed dark brown leather ($3,950) the most dramatic. How to wear a croc bag
Treat a black croco bag as a black bag with texture: it goes with everything a black bag goes with, and it lifts plain clothes more than smooth leather does. Wear it with a grey knit and trousers, with denim and a white shirt, with a black dress at night. Keep the rest of the outfit matt (wool, cotton, suede) so the sheen of the bag is the only shine. Midnight croco works the same way with navy and grey. Burgundy lizard is the statement: let it be the only colour.
“Leather is a noble material, but it can easily become predictable,” Xavier Valembert told Style Essentials in March 2026. “For us, leather should not only look beautiful, it should age with dignity.”
Frequently asked questions
What is a croc-embossed bag?
A bag in calf leather pressed with a heated engraved plate so it takes the scale pattern of crocodile skin. It is not real crocodile.
Is croc-embossed leather real leather?
Yes. It is real bovine leather with an embossed surface. Ateliers Auguste uses Italian calf for its croco and lizard editions.
Does croc-embossed leather scratch?
Less than smooth leather. The relief masks fine scratches, which is one of the reasons to choose it for an everyday bag.
How do you clean a croc-embossed bag?
Wipe it with a soft dry cloth, keep it away from heat and long sun, and store it stuffed in its dust bag. Avoid solvents and wet cleaning.
Are the Ateliers Auguste croc bags limited?
Yes. The brand labels each croco- and lizard-embossed Gold Edition a limited edition of 100 pieces.
How much is an Ateliers Auguste croc bag?
At Coveti on 25 October 2026, $980 to $1,360, depending on the model.
