Camel Bags: How to Choose One and the Best to Buy
A camel bag is a handbag in the warm, mid-toned brown of camel hair: lighter than chocolate, deeper than beige, with a gold undertone. Among designer shoulder bags in camel and tan it is the most useful colour for winter, because it sits with black, navy, grey, cream and denim alike, and it is the colour we suggest as a second bag after black. Ateliers Auguste makes it in three leathers, from $870 to $1,350 at Coveti.
Key facts
- What camel means: a warm mid-brown with a yellow undertone, named after camel hair cloth. Brands also call it tan, cognac and caramel.
- Ateliers Auguste calls the shade Tan in English and camel in French; at Coveti it comes in Italian box calf, smooth calf and suede, 20 bags in all.
- Box calf keeps the colour flat and even; smooth calf takes a soft sheen; suede reads darker and more matt.
- Brown shades are among the easier leather colours to dye evenly, according to the brand’s own colour guide, which is one reason camel holds its tone across a range.
- Price at Coveti on 7 November 2026: $870 to $1,350 for Ateliers Auguste in Tan.
Camel, tan, cognac and caramel: which is which
The names overlap and no two brands use them the same way, so judge the leather, not the label. Camel is the middle: a sandy, golden brown. Tan is usually a touch lighter and more yellow. Cognac runs redder, toward the colour of the drink in the glass. Caramel sits between camel and cognac, with more warmth. In practice Ateliers Auguste Tan is a cognac-leaning camel in box calf and a slightly lighter, sunnier shade in suede, because suede scatters the light. If you want the deepest version, choose the box calf; if you want the softest, the suede.
What to wear with a camel bag
Camel works because it carries warmth into colours that have none. With a black coat it softens the outfit. With navy it looks deliberate, the classic pairing of a French wardrobe. With grey flannel it gives the grey some life. With a camel coat it should be a different texture: a camel suede bag against a wool coat, never the same tone in the same finish, which flattens both. In winter, chocolate boots and a camel bag in box calf are the easiest pairing we know; in spring, the same bag looks right with white denim. Around the world
Average monthly Google searches, from Google Ads data read through DataForSEO on 7 November 2026:
| Search | Worldwide | United States | United Kingdom | UAE | Saudi Arabia |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| camel bag | 18,100 | 2,900 | 720 | 110 | 70 |
Camel is searched for most in the United States, and the worldwide figure jumped to 40,500 in October 2025 before settling back: it is a colour people look for as the weather turns.
In the United Kingdom and northern Europe, choose box calf over suede for a camel bag you will carry in the rain; the house treats its leathers to resist rain, and its care guide still says to blot a wet bag dry and never to use heat. In the Gulf, keep a light camel bag out of strong sun: the brand’s colour guide warns that sunlight and heat can shift light leather tones. Sizing, prices and delivery from Coveti are the same in every market.
“Leather is a noble material, but it can easily become predictable,” Xavier Valembert told Style Essentials in March 2026. “For us, leather should not only look beautiful, it should age with dignity.”
Frequently asked questions
What colour is a camel bag?
A warm mid-brown with a golden undertone, named after camel hair cloth. It sits between beige and chocolate.

Close, but not quite. Tan is usually a touch lighter and more yellow; cognac is redder. Ateliers Auguste calls its shade Tan in English and camel in French.
What goes with a camel bag?
Black, navy, grey, cream and denim. Navy and camel is the classic pairing; with a camel coat, choose a different texture so the two do not flatten each other.

Yes. It warms a dark winter wardrobe. Choose box calf over suede if you will carry it in the rain.
