Draped Dresses: How Draping Works, Who It Suits and the Best to Buy

0

A draped dress is shaped by folds of fabric rather than by seams and darts. The fabric is pinned, gathered and twisted on the body so it falls in soft lines, which flatters almost every figure because the folds skim rather than cling. The most beautiful examples right now come from Lebanese designer Sandra Mansour, whose collections at Sandra Mansour at Coveti are built almost entirely on drape.

Which fabrics drape best

Drape depends on weight and fluidity. Crepe georgette is the classic choice: light, matte and slightly grainy, it falls in narrow, controlled folds. Silk jersey drapes in softer, rounder folds and is the most forgiving to wear. Liquid charmeuse and satin catch the light on every fold, which makes them dramatic for evening but less forgiving on the hip. Tulle can be draped too, in layers, for volume without weight.

Where the drape sits, and why it matters

  • At the bust: draping across the bust adds volume and suits a smaller chest.
  • At the waist and hip: folds gathered at one hip create a waist and balance a straighter figure.
  • Asymmetric: a diagonal drape from one shoulder draws the eye on a long line and is very flattering on a fuller figure.
  • Over a corset: a fitted bodice under a draped overlay gives you structure and softness together.

The best draped dresses to buy

1. Weightless Dress in Off White

An open-back halter in crepe georgette, draped from the neck to a side slit. The definitive draped evening dress.

2. Drift Dress in Taupe

A high-neck asymmetric drape over a fitted crepe bodice, in a soft taupe that suits most skin tones.

3. Devotion Dress in Dark Grey

Silk jersey that wraps around the neck and falls to an asymmetric front slit. Easy to wear and to pack.

4. Longing Dress in Champagne

Long sleeves, a deep v-neck and an asymmetric drape through the skirt.

5. Soft Echo Dress in Violet

A long, high-neck drape in silk crepe georgette and a saturated violet.

6. Corps Libre Dress in Lilac

Liquid charmeuse with off-shoulder draping, the most fluid piece in the Arte collection.

Draped vs ruched vs wrap

The three words are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. Ruching gathers fabric tightly along a seam so it bunches into small, regular ripples, usually over the torso; it is close-fitting by design. Draping lets larger folds hang and fall with gravity, so the fabric moves away from the body as well as over it. A wrap dress crosses one side over the other and ties at the waist; it can be draped, but the wrap is a fastening, not a technique. If you want a dress that flatters without clinging, draping is the one to look for.

Draped dresses by occasion

  • Black-tie wedding: a floor-length drape in crepe georgette and satin, ideally with a back detail. See black-tie wedding guest dresses.
  • Gala: a one-shoulder and asymmetric drape in a saturated colour. Our guide to what to wear to a gala covers dress codes.
  • Summer wedding abroad: silk jersey, which packs without creasing and stays cool.
  • Cocktail party: a short draped dress, such as a draped taffeta mini.

How to care for a draped dress

Most draped evening dresses are dry clean only, because the folds are often tacked by hand and a washing machine pulls them out of place. Hang them on a padded hanger, never fold silk jersey for long, and steam rather than iron so you do not flatten the drape.

How to style a draped dress

Let the drape be the detail. Keep jewellery to one piece, ideally an earring on the side the drape does not cover, and choose a slim heel so the folds fall cleanly. Pull the hair back on a one-shoulder drape to keep the line clear. If the dress has a slit, a sandal with a fine strap looks better than a closed pump.

Frequently asked questions

What is a draped dress?

A draped dress is shaped by folds of fabric that are gathered, twisted and pinned on the body instead of by seams. The folds fall softly and skim the figure.

Do draped dresses suit every body type?

Almost every body type. A drape at the hip creates a waist on a straight figure, an asymmetric drape lengthens a fuller figure, and draping at the bust adds volume to a small chest.

What fabric is best for a draped dress?

Crepe georgette and silk jersey drape best. Satin and charmeuse drape well too but show every fold, so they are better for evening.

Are draped dresses appropriate for a black-tie wedding?

Yes. A floor-length draped gown in crepe georgette and satin is a classic black-tie choice; see our guide to black-tie wedding guest dresses.
