Is Zimmermann a Luxury Brand? An Honest Buyer’s Guide
Yes. Zimmermann is a luxury label: founded in Sydney in 1991 by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, it has shown at Paris Fashion Week since October 2022, has around 90 boutiques worldwide and has been majority owned by the private equity firm Advent International since August 2023. It is a contemporary luxury house rather than a heritage maison, and the fabric, the make and the original prints hold up to a close look.
Zimmermann sits in a part of the market that confuses a lot of shoppers. The prints feel playful and the swim feels easy, yet the price tags ask for real commitment and the craft rewards a closer look. So the question is fair, and so is the one that follows it: is Zimmermann worth the spend? The short answer from our fashion desk is yes, with some nuance worth understanding before you buy.
A quick history of the house
Zimmermann was founded in Sydney in 1991 by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann. Nicky designed dresses in her parents’ garage and sold them at Paddington Markets on weekends, and the first boutique opened in Darlinghurst in 1992. The label started with dresses; swimwear became an early signature. It made its New York Fashion Week debut with the Spring 2014 collection in September 2013, then moved to Paris, where the Spring/Summer 2023 “Wonderland” show took place at the Petit Palais on 3 October 2022. Nicky Zimmermann is chief creative officer and leads design. Our Zimmermann history has the full timeline.
Who owns Zimmermann?
Advent International owns a majority stake in Zimmermann, which it took on 8 August 2023. Style Capital and the Zimmermann family kept a significant minority. Terms were not disclosed, though press reports put the valuation at around 1.5 to 1.75 billion Australian dollars. The ownership chain runs like this:
| Date | Investor | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | General Atlantic | Took a minority stake |
| December 2020 | Style Capital, Milan | Bought 70%; the family kept 30% and General Atlantic exited |
| 8 August 2023 | Advent International | Took a majority stake; Style Capital and the family kept a significant minority |
The family still owns part of the business. Nicky Zimmermann leads design as chief creative officer and co-founder, and Simone Zimmermann is co-founder. Roberto Eggs, previously at Moncler, became chief executive on 1 May 2026. Chris Olliver, chief executive since 2005, became executive chairman in 2026.
Where Zimmermann shows and sells
Zimmermann shows its main collections at Paris Fashion Week. After the 2022 debut at the Petit Palais, the Fall 2026 collection was shown on 9 March 2026 at the Carreau du Temple. A Paris runway slot puts the label on the same calendar as the established luxury houses.
Zimmermann had about 58 stores at the time of the Advent deal; Ragtrader counted 91 worldwide in November 2025. In London there are stores on Bruton Street and Sloane Street. New York has Madison Avenue, the Meatpacking District and SoHo. Paris has rue François 1er, Faubourg Saint-Honoré (opened December 2023) and Galeries Lafayette. In Dubai, the Mall of the Emirates store opened in 2024 as the brand’s first in the Middle East, and there is a second Dubai store at Atlantis The Royal on The Palm. Further Gulf stores are in Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Kuwait and Bahrain. Our guide on where to buy Zimmermann has more.
What makes Zimmermann a luxury label
Luxury is built on more than a logo, and Zimmermann earns the description in the ways that matter.
- Materials. Silk, linen and considered blends carry the prints. The current collection includes silk-linen organza and ramie, and the hand of the fabric is a large part of what you pay for.
- Craft. Embroidery, beading, broderie and lace take time and skill, and so does the print development itself. Look closely at a Zimmermann dress and the detailing holds up.
- Design signature. The house has a clear and consistent point of view. In its own words: “Sophisticated femininity, clever colour combinations and delicate original prints.” That is the mark of a real fashion house, not a trend follower.
- Positioning. A Paris runway, boutiques in the major luxury cities and a place alongside the designer resort names put Zimmermann firmly in contemporary luxury.
What you are paying for
With Zimmermann, most of the value sits in the garment. Take the new Momentum Corded Mini Dress in Blue Bird Floral: it is placement printed on silk-linen organza, so the motif is set on each pattern piece, and it is built on a corset bodice. The new Valiant Lingerie Bodice in Black is a lace bodice with a separate bra and suspenders. The new Fitted Shirt in Cream Ribbon carries a placement print on ramie.
Turn any dress at this level inside out before you judge it. On sheer fabrics such as organza, the lining is what makes the dress wearable, and the way the lining and seams are finished tells you more than the label does. Then look at the print. Zimmermann’s prints are original to the house, and a placement print has to be planned around the pattern before a metre of fabric is printed. Our guide on why Zimmermann is expensive goes deeper into the cost of the make.
How it compares
It helps to be precise. Zimmermann is not a heritage maison in the mould of Chanel and Dior, and it does not try to be. It is a contemporary luxury house with a specialism in dresses, resort and swim, and within that lane it is one of the strongest names working today. If you love the romance of the prints and the quality of the make, it delivers. To explore the neighbourhood, our guide to brands like Zimmermann maps the closest alternatives stocked at Coveti.
Who wears Zimmermann?
Three well-documented moments show the reach. Catherine, then Duchess of Cambridge, wore the Zimmermann Roamer broderie dress at Manly Beach in Sydney in April 2014, during the royal tour. Taylor Swift wore an ivory floral cut-out Zimmermann dress to Karen Elson’s wedding in New York on 7 September 2024, as WWD reported. Queen Mary of Denmark wore a Zimmermann lace top and skirt to the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum on 1 November 2025.
Is Zimmermann sustainable?
Zimmermann has climate targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), measured against a FY2020 baseline: a 50% cut in scope 1 and 2 emissions by FY2030, a 30% cut in scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and upstream transport by FY2030, and net zero across its value chain by FY2050. Alongside the targets, it began a regenerative cotton programme with Good Earth Cotton in March 2024, partnered with ZDHC on chemicals and with Seamless on textile waste in November 2024, has a Supplier Code of Conduct, and published its Sustainability Report 2025 in February 2026. Targets are not results, but these are public and measurable.
Is it worth it?
