Linen Wide-Leg Pants: Fit, Rise, Length and How to Wear Them
Good linen wide-leg pants sit at a high rise, fall straight from the hip and finish long enough to brush the top of your shoes, so the fabric moves in one clean column instead of collapsing at the ankle. Our wide-leg pants edit is the place to start, and the Alémais Resort 2027 collection has two of the best linen pairs this season, plus a few silk and viscose alternatives we label clearly below.
Key facts
- Linen wide-leg pants look best at a high rise, falling straight from the hip.
- With flat shoes, the hem of wide-leg pants should graze the top of the foot.
- The Alemais Alita Pant and Lucena Pant are made in 100% European linen.
- The Alemais Sophie Pant is a 55% viscose, 40% silk and 5% elastane blend, and the Martos Pant is 100% viscose.
Fit and rise
A wide leg needs a high rise to look right. When the waistband sits at your natural waist, the leg drops from the widest part of the hip and the line looks long. A mid rise works on shorter frames, but a low rise pulls the volume down and makes linen look sloppy.
Check the seat from the side. Linen does not stretch, so if the fabric pulls across the bottom when you sit, size up. The waist can always be belted, while a tight seat cannot be fixed.
Length and creasing
For flats, the hem should graze the top of the foot. For a sandal with a small heel, add a centimetre. Cropped wide legs, ending at the ankle bone, are easier with trainers and look deliberate with a cropped top.
Linen creases, and it should. The creases at the hip and knee are part of the charm, and a well-made pair softens with wear rather than looking worse. Steam the front leg before you go out, hang them by the hem to let gravity help, and accept the rest.
The Alémais edit
1. Alita Pant
The Alita Pant is 100% European linen with a regular fit and a wide leg, printed, and made to pair with the Alita Shirt and Alita Top.
2. Alita Shirt
The Alita Shirt is the same 100% European linen with an oversized fit. Tuck in one corner and wear the set in town.
3. Lucena Pant
The Lucena Pant is another 100% European linen wide-leg trouser with a regular fit, in a print that partners the Lucena pieces.
4. Lucena Shirt
The Lucena Shirt is labelled 100% linen with an oversized fit. Worn loose over the matching pant, it makes the easiest holiday uniform.
5. Alessia Cropped Pant
The Alessia Cropped Pant is not linen but 100% hemp, with a regular fit and a cropped length. Hemp looks very similar and creases a little less.
6. Martos Pant
The Martos Pant is 100% viscose, not linen. It is wide-leg with a regular fit and a much more fluid drape, so choose it for evenings.
7. Sophie Pant
The Sophie Pant is a blend of 55% viscose, 40% silk and 5% elastane, again not linen, with a regular fit and a wide leg. The print uses artwork by artist Sophie Wahlquist.
How to wear linen wide-leg pants
- Keep the top close. A fitted vest, a cropped shirt and a bralette all balance the volume below.
- Go tonal. Matching shirt and trouser in the same linen is the smartest way to wear wide legs on holiday.
- Choose the right shoe. Flat sandals for day, a low block heel for dinner, a clean trainer for travel.
- Tuck at the front only. A half tuck shows the waistband and keeps the line long.
- Add a knit for evening. A fine wool cardigan over the shoulders works in cooler air.
Sizing and care
Alémais uses Australian sizes, which match UK sizes one for one: an AU 8 is a UK 8 and a US 4. Knitwear runs in letters from XXS to XXL. Every piece carries the brand's own fit note, so check it before you choose. Full tables are in our Alémais size guide.
Each Alémais piece has its own care label, cold hand wash for some and dry clean only for others, so check every pair. Dry linen flat in the shade to stop colour fading.
For more choice, look at Camilla and Marc, By Malina and Stine Goya. Our Alémais pants and shorts guide covers the rest of the range, and the linen and hemp guide explains how the two fibres differ.
Frequently asked questions
How should linen wide-leg pants fit?
They should sit at a high rise, fall straight from the hip and have a little ease across the seat. Linen does not stretch, so size for the hip and belt the waist if needed.
How long should wide-leg linen pants be?
With flats, the hem should graze the top of the foot. Add a centimetre for a small heel, and choose a cropped pair for trainers.
How do you stop linen pants from creasing?
You cannot stop linen creasing completely. Steam the front leg, hang the pants by the hem, and accept soft creases as part of the fabric.
What top goes with linen wide-leg pants?
A fitted vest, a cropped shirt and a matching linen shirt worn half tucked all balance the volume of a wide leg.
