Reversible Belts: How They Work and How to Wear One
A reversible belt is a single leather strap finished in a different colour and texture on each face, with a buckle that turns so you can wear either side, giving you two belts for the space of one. ME+EM has three new examples arriving on Coveti, starting with the ME+EM Reversible Belt in Navy/Pecan, and the label’s other accessories are gathered in our ME+EM shoes, bags and accessories guide.
This guide explains how the reversing mechanism works, which colour pairs earn their place, how to size a belt from a measurement chart, and how to wear a slim reversible belt. For the wider category, see our guides to designer belts for women and wide leather belts.
How a reversible belt works
The strap is made from two leathers placed back to back, each finished differently. The buckle is attached on a pivot rather than sewn into a fixed loop. To switch faces you release the pivot, rotate the buckle half a turn and lock it again, so the prong now points through the holes from the other side.
ME+EM’s version uses a pull-and-twist action. In the house’s words, you gently pull the buckle outwards and twist until it locks into place to switch sides. There is no clip to undo and nothing to lose. The holes are punched through both layers, so they line up whichever face is out.
Two things to check on any reversible belt: that the buckle locks firmly after turning, and that the edges are finished cleanly on both sides, since both will be seen.
Choosing the colour pair
Black and brown. The classic pair, covering every trouser colour between them. Black for grey, navy and black tailoring; brown for denim, camel and olive.
Smooth and textured. A plain face for work, an embossed face for the weekend. Snake embossing and crinkle patent add surface without adding colour.
Navy and tan. A softer pair that suits a wardrobe of blues, creams and browns, and avoids black altogether.
Matching your hardware. A reversible belt has one buckle, so pick a metal that suits both faces. A warm brass sits well with brown, tan and navy alike.
The three new ME+EM reversible belts
Navy/Pecan. The Reversible Belt in Navy/Pecan pairs Italian leather on one side with Italian vegetable-tanned leather on the other. ME+EM chose the two tones to sit with separates across its collection.
Chocolate/Black. The Reversible Belt in Chocolate/Black has Italian snake-embossed leather in chocolate on one face and plain Italian leather in black on the other: the most useful pair if you wear a lot of black and want a textured option.
Black Brown/Chocolate patent. The Reversible Belt in Black/Brown combines Italian vegetable-tanned leather with Italian crinkle patent leather in chocolate brown. The patent side has a soft shine for evening.
All three are 30 mm wide, offered in XS to XL and made in Italy. The Navy/Pecan and Chocolate/Black belts have additional holes to cover a wider range of sizes. Already on Coveti is the Reversible Belt in Port Brown/Caramel.

How we measured: leathers, hardware, width, sizes and the measurements above come from the three ME+EM product pages and ME+EM’s own published belt size chart in centimetres, which is identical for all three new belts; sizes for the Port Brown/Caramel belt come from the Coveti catalogue (Store API). We did not re-measure the belts.
How to size a reversible belt
Ignore your dress size at first and measure where the belt will actually sit. Put a tape round your trousers at the belt loops, over the fabric, and note the figure. Then read the buckle attachment to centre hole row: you want the centre hole closest to your measurement, so you have holes to spare either way.
On the ME+EM chart, a 76 cm measurement lands on the centre hole of a size S, with the last hole at 83.5 cm. If you plan to wear the belt on the waist over a dress as well as on the hips in jeans, take two measurements and choose the size whose hole range covers both. The total length tells you how much tail will show beyond the buckle.
How to wear a 30 mm reversible belt
With tailored trousers. A 30 mm strap fits standard trouser loops. Wear the smooth face with wool trousers and a tucked shirt.
With jeans. Turn to the textured face, snake and crinkle patent, with straight-leg denim and a knit.
Over a dress. At the natural waist over a shirt dress and a long knit dress, a slim belt defines the shape without the weight of a wide waist belt.
Over a coat. A narrow belt over a straight wool coat cinches it on cold days; check the larger size if you plan to do this.
For other slim leather options, see the Snake Embossed Skinny Belt in Tan/Black and the Square Buckle Belt in Black.
Reversible belts around the world
US. Reversible belt is searched about 1,900 times a month, with reversible belt women adding around 880. It also makes a sensible travel belt: one strap for a whole trip.
UK. Around 590 monthly searches for reversible belt and 320 for the women’s version. Brown and navy pairs suit the denim and knitwear that carry a British winter.
EU. In France ceinture reversible, in Italy cintura reversibile. Italian vegetable-tanned leather is a familiar quality marker in both markets.
GCC. Belts for women sees around 590 searches a month in the UAE. A slim reversible belt suits lightweight trousers and long dresses worn through the warm months, and packs flat for travel.
How to care for a reversible leather belt
ME+EM labels all three belts as wipe clean. Use a soft dry cloth, and a barely damp one for marks. The house warns that the dyeing process can cause some colour transfer, especially if the leather gets wet, so avoid contact with light surfaces, pale garments and upholstery, and let a damp belt dry away from heat. Patent leather can be wiped clean and polished with a dry cloth. Store belts rolled loosely, not hung by the buckle, to protect the pivot.
Frequently asked questions
How do you switch a reversible belt?
On the ME+EM belts, gently pull the buckle outwards and twist it until it locks in place on the other side.
Are reversible belts as durable as standard belts?
Durability depends on the leather and the buckle pivot. The ME+EM belts use cow leather on both faces; whichever belt you choose, check that the buckle locks firmly after turning.
What width is best for trousers?
Around 30 mm suits most trouser loops. The ME+EM reversible belts are 30 mm wide.
How do I choose my belt size?
Measure round your trousers at the belt loops, then match that figure to the buckle-to-centre-hole measurement on the size chart.
Which colour pair is most versatile?
Black and brown covers almost every outfit. Navy and tan is the softer choice for a wardrobe without black.
Can a reversible belt be worn with a dress?
Yes. A slim reversible belt at the waist works over shirt dresses, knit dresses and long coats.
