What to Wear to the Melbourne Cup 2026: A Day by Day Guide, in Zimmermann

The Melbourne Cup Carnival 2026 runs over four race days: Derby Day on Saturday 31 October, Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November, Oaks Day on Thursday 5 November and Stakes Day on Saturday 7 November. The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) publishes style guidance for each day, from a black and white Derby Day to “vivid tones, daring prints, and statement hats” on Cup Day. Below is what to wear to each, dressed in Zimmermann.

Is there a dress code at the Melbourne Cup?

Not for general admission. According to the Victoria Racing Club, there are no dress regulations for general admission, and hats are encouraged but not mandatory. What the VRC does publish is style guidance and a signature flower for each day, and following them is half the pleasure of dressing for the races. The Members’ enclosure is the exception: it has its own rules, so if you hold Members’ tickets, read them before you plan anything else.

Spring racing fashion is also judged in public here. Fashions on the Field has been part of the carnival since 1962.

Melbourne Cup Day Tuesday 3 November “vivid tones, daring prints, and statement hats” Yellow rose Colour and print: the Momentum Corded Mini Dress in Blue Bird Floral

Derby Day outfit: black and white

Derby Day, on Saturday 31 October, has the strictest palette of the four: black and white, with the blue cornflower as its flower. Keep the colour disciplined and let texture do the work.

For black, the Bias Midi Dress and the Aster Scarf Midi Dress are both midi lengths in black that sit well under a white hat. The Ascent Corseted Mini Dress in black and cream does both colours in one piece. For the white side of the palette, the Luna Lace Frill Midi Dress in ivory reads as day dressing and takes a black hat and black shoes well.

The most interesting Derby look this season uses the new Valiant Lingerie Bodice in Black, a lace bodice with a separate bra and suspenders, as a layering piece. Wear it over the Aster Lace Trim Slip Dress in ivory and you have black and white in a single outfit, lace on lace. If you want one note of colour, the blue cornflower is the one with a reason to be there.

Melbourne Cup Day outfit: vivid colour and print

Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November, is the day to be bold. The VRC asks for “vivid tones, daring prints, and statement hats”, and the flower is the yellow rose.

The new Momentum Corded Mini Dress in Blue Bird Floral is the print answer: silk-linen organza with a corset bodice, from the Trailblazer group of the Fall 2026 collection. For colour without print, the new Pleated Tiered Midi Dress in Bottle Green is a deep, saturated shade that holds its own under a big hat. The new Pleated Sleeved Midi Dress in Deco Blue has a pussybow neck and a tiered pleated skirt, and its sleeves help on a cooler afternoon. There is more in our Zimmermann midi dresses edit and in our guide to Zimmermann floral dresses.

Keep the hat in proportion to the dress. With a printed mini, a solid brim pulls the look together. With a solid midi, the hat can carry the drama.

Oaks Day outfit: lace, florals and soft colour

Oaks Day, Thursday 5 November, is about pastels, florals and lace, with “delicate millinery” in the VRC’s words and the pink rose as the flower. It is the softest of the four days.

The new Pleated Tiered Midi Dress in Cream Bird Print is the natural starting point, the same pleated, tiered shape as the Cup Day green in a bird print on cream. For lace, the Ascent Lace Frill Dress in cream is a complete look on its own. Separates give you more range: the Indra Lace Shirt in tea and the Luna Lace Frill Halter Top in ivory both sit well with a pastel skirt. The new Valiant Lingerie Bodice in Cream does on Oaks Day what the black version does on Derby Day, layered over a slip. Browse Zimmermann lace, and read our guide to Zimmermann lace dresses for the full picture.

Keep the millinery fine: a slim headband and fresh flowers both suit the brief.

Stakes Day outfit: a relaxed garden party

Stakes Day, Saturday 7 November, closes the carnival in the mood of a relaxed garden party, with the red poppy as its flower. This is the day for separates.

Pair the new Gathered Midi Skirt in Camel with the new Fitted Shirt in Cream Ribbon, a ramie shirt with a placement print. Camel and cream are easy together, and a red poppy gives them a point of colour. For a younger take, keep the shirt and change the skirt for the new Denim Frill Mini Skirt in Onyx Blue, cut in rigid high-rise denim with a full flare hem. Denim at the races needs a relaxed day, and Stakes Day is it. Our Zimmermann denim guide covers the rest of the range.

Do you have to wear a hat to the Melbourne Cup?

No. The Victoria Racing Club encourages hats but does not make them mandatory, and general admission has no dress regulations. The Members’ enclosure sets its own rules. If you do wear one, match it to the day: a statement hat for Cup Day, “delicate millinery” for Oaks Day, black and white for Derby Day, and something relaxed, a straw brim perhaps, for Stakes Day.

What shoes work on grass at the races?

Race days are long, and a good part of them is spent on lawn. A fine stiletto sinks into turf, while a block heel, a wedge and a flat all spread the weight. Whatever the heel, choose a pair you have already worn for a full day, and have the hem of a midi adjusted to that height. A flat pair in your bag is sensible for the walk home.

Layering for a spring race day

A spring race day can start cool and finish warm, so build in a layer that does not spoil the line. The new Fine Knit High Neck Top in Cream is a sheer viscose turtleneck that sits under a slip dress without bulk; wear it under an ivory dress on Derby Day. The same Fine Knit High Neck Top in Bordeaux works under the Bottle Green midi on Cup Day, a strong colour pairing for the boldest day of the four. For heavier layers, see Zimmermann knitwear and our guide to Zimmermann knitwear and coats.

When should you order your Melbourne Cup outfit?

Early. Derby Day is Saturday 31 October, and you want the outfit in hand with time to try it with your shoes and hat, have a hem taken up and settle the accessories. Coveti ships worldwide and every piece is authentic, but we would not leave it to the final week. Check your size against our Zimmermann size guide before you order: a Zimmermann 0 is a UK 8 and a US 4.
