Zimmermann Floral Dresses: How the House Uses Print

0

Zimmermann describes itself in one line: “Sophisticated femininity, clever colour combinations and delicate original prints.” That line is the short answer to what the label is known for, and a Zimmermann floral dress is where all of it shows at once. The house was founded in Sydney in 1991 by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, and it started with dresses.

Below are the print families in the current edit, what “placement printed” means, and how to choose, wear and care for a print. The full range sits in our Zimmermann designer dresses edit.

What is Zimmermann known for?

Zimmermann is known for printed dresses with a romantic cut, and for swimwear. Nicky Zimmermann designed the first dresses in her parents’ garage and sold them at Paddington Markets on weekends. The first boutique opened in Darlinghurst in 1992, and swim became an early signature alongside the dresses. The house now shows in Paris, where it made its debut with the Spring/Summer 2023 “Wonderland” collection at the Petit Palais in October 2022, and it has around 90 boutiques worldwide.

The “clever colour combinations” in that description are easiest to see in a printed dress, where the ground, the motif and the trim all have to agree.

Which print families does Zimmermann use?

Four print families run through the Zimmermann dresses and separates we carry now. What makes them read as Zimmermann is the scale, the colour and where the motif lands on the body.

Print family How it reads Where to see it at Coveti
Florals Romantic at any scale; the size of the flower sets the mood Momentum Corded Mini Dress, Blue Bird Floral
Bird prints Birds as the motif, sometimes folded into a floral Pleated Tiered Midi Dress, Cream Bird Print
Scarf prints Borders and framed motifs borrowed from a printed silk square Aster Scarf Midi Dress
Placement prints The motif is positioned on each pattern piece before sewing Fitted Shirt, Cream Ribbon

The new Momentum Corded Mini Dress in Blue Bird Floral sits across two of those families, as the colourway name tells you. It is placement printed on silk-linen organza, with a corset bodice, and it comes from the Fall 2026 collection that Zimmermann showed in Paris on 9 March 2026 at the Carreau du Temple. The new Pleated Tiered Midi Dress in Cream Bird Print puts the bird motif on a tiered midi, and the same dress also comes in Bottle Green. The new Fitted Shirt in Cream Ribbon is a placement print on ramie, a crisp plant fibre close to linen in handle.

Elsewhere in the printed edit, look at the Aster Scarf Midi Dress, the Roselight Plunge Midi Dress, the Roselight Halter Maxi Dress and the Printed Ruffle Midi Dress. To browse by length, start with Zimmermann midi dresses and Zimmermann maxi dresses.

What does “placement printed” mean?

Placement printed means the print is positioned on the pattern pieces, instead of the pieces being cut from a running length of printed fabric. Most printed cloth is made as a continuous repeat, and the pattern pieces are cut from it wherever they fit. The motif then lands where it lands: a flower can be split by a seam, and the left and right fronts rarely match.

A placement print reverses the order. Each motif is set where it should sit on the body, centred on a bodice, running along a hem, lined up across a seam. It asks more of the pattern room and the printer, which is why a label bothers to name it.

On the Momentum Corded Mini Dress, placement matters most at the corset bodice, where a running print would be broken up by the seams. On a shirt such as the Fitted Shirt in Cream Ribbon, placement lets the print be planned around the collar and button stand instead of running through them at random. To check for yourself, look at the centre front and the side seams. If the motifs meet cleanly, someone planned it.

How do you choose a print for your colouring and the occasion?

Start with the ground colour, because that is what sits next to your face.

  • Ground colour. Cream grounds, such as Cream Bird Print and Cream Ribbon, read soft and light. A blue colourway such as Blue Bird Floral suits cool colouring and gives dark hair a crisp frame.
  • Contrast. If your hair, skin and eyes contrast strongly, a print with crisp, defined motifs holds its own. If your colouring is soft and blended, look for tonal prints where the motif sits close to the ground.
  • Scale. Small motifs read as texture from across a room. Large motifs become the point of the outfit. A long maxi carries a large print well; on a petite frame, small and medium scales usually sit better.
  • Occasion. Daytime and garden events suit open florals on a light ground. For evening, a darker ground looks more considered. At the races, the dress code tells you how bold to go.

How do you style a printed Zimmermann dress?

One print, quiet accessories. A Zimmermann print is already doing the talking, so a second print, a patterned bag and large jewellery only compete with it.

  • Take one colour from the print for your shoes and bag. If nothing in the print suits, match the ground colour instead.
  • Keep jewellery small: one pair of earrings, a fine chain, nothing that sits on top of the motif.
  • Separates follow the same rule. Wear the Fitted Shirt in Cream Ribbon with the Slim Flare Jean in Onyx Blue at the weekend, and with the Gathered Midi Skirt in Camel when you want more polish. In both, the shirt is the only print.

Print for weddings and the races

A print answers the wedding-guest question neatly, because it rarely reads as bridal. As reported by WWD, Taylor Swift wore an ivory floral cut-out Zimmermann dress to Karen Elson’s wedding in New York on 7 September 2024. If you are unsure how the couple feels about pale colours, choose a coloured print such as Blue Bird Floral over a cream ground. For more on dressing for the day, see our Zimmermann wedding guest guide.

The races suit print even better. The Victoria Racing Club’s guidance for the 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival asks for “vivid tones, daring prints, and statement hats” on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November, and for pastels, florals, lace and “delicate millinery” on Oaks Day, Thursday 5 November. Derby Day, Saturday 31 October, keeps its black and white signature, so save colourful prints for later in the week. Stakes Day, Saturday 7 November, has a relaxed garden party mood. Hats are encouraged but not mandatory, and the Members’ enclosure has its own rules. Day-by-day picks are in our guide to what to wear to the Melbourne Cup.

How do you care for printed silk?

Start with the care label inside the garment, every time, because it is written for that fabric and that print. Silk and silk blends such as silk-linen organza are delicate, so unless the label says otherwise, take them to a dry cleaner who handles silk and tell them what the fabric is.

  • Keep perfume, deodorant and hairspray off the print, and let them dry before you dress.
  • Store printed silk away from direct sunlight, which fades colour over time.
  • Hang it on a padded hanger with room around it, so organza and pleats do not crush.
  • Steam out creases from the reverse side, and never put a hot iron straight onto the print.

Our Zimmermann care and authenticity guide covers care in more detail, along with how to check that a piece is genuine.

Frequently asked questions

What is Zimmermann known for?

Zimmermann is known for romantic printed dresses and for swimwear. The Sydney label, founded in 1991 by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, describes its signature as sophisticated femininity, clever colour combinations and delicate original prints.

Are Zimmermann prints original?

Zimmermann describes its prints as original in its own statement of what the brand stands for. The current edit at Coveti includes florals, bird prints, scarf prints and placement prints.

What does placement printed mean on a Zimmermann dress?

It means the print is positioned on the pattern pieces before the dress is sewn, instead of being cut from a running length of printed fabric. The motifs sit deliberately on the body and line up across the seams.

Can you wear a Zimmermann floral dress to a wedding?

Yes. A printed dress rarely reads as bridal, which makes it a strong wedding-guest choice. If the couple would prefer guests to avoid pale colours, choose a print with a coloured ground over a cream one.

Which Zimmermann print suits the Melbourne Cup?

The Victoria Racing Club’s guidance for Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November 2026, calls for vivid tones, daring prints and statement hats, so a bold Zimmermann print fits. Oaks Day, Thursday 5 November, leans to pastels, florals and lace.
