Who Is Bogner? The Munich Ski House Explained
Bogner is the Munich ski and luxury sportswear house that Willy Bogner founded in 1932. It is best known for the stretch ski trouser Maria Bogner introduced in 1948, for dressing German Olympic skiers since 1936, and for down ski jackets that look as good in the village as on the piste. Coveti now carries the full Bogner edit, from ski trousers to cashmere knits.
How Bogner started
Willy Bogner was a Nordic skier who spent a year in Norway learning how skis were made. He came home with the rights to sell Norwegian skis and opened a ski shop on the Schommerstrasse in Munich in 1932. The shop sold skis, equipment and knitwear, and it soon started making its own clothes. Four years later the German team wore a Bogner windbreaker at the Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Bogner has dressed German Olympic skiers ever since, which is why the brand still treats technical performance as seriously as the look.
Maria Bogner and the stretch ski trouser
The design side of the house came from Maria Bogner. In 1948 she showed stretch ski trousers cut slim through the leg and held down with a stirrup under the foot. They replaced baggy wool breeches and changed how skiers looked. The cut was copied so widely that ski pants of that shape were simply called Bogners. You can still buy the idea today in the Elaine Softshell Stirrup Trousers with Gussets in Black, and our guide to stretch ski pants explains why the shape works.
Willy Bogner Jr., film and Fire+Ice
Their son, Willy Bogner Jr., raced for Germany at the 1960 and 1964 Winter Olympics and later became a filmmaker. He shot ski sequences for several James Bond films and made the 1986 film Fire and Ice. That film gave its name to the younger Bogner line, launched in 1989. Read more in Bogner Fire+Ice explained.
The three Bogner lines
- Bogner: the luxury collection, with cashmere knits, wool coats, lambskin and down jackets for town and chalet.
- Bogner Sport: the technical skiwear, with down ski jackets, softshell stirrup trousers and first layers.
- Fire+Ice: the younger line, with bolder colour, ski jackets, ski trousers and overalls at a lower price.
Is Bogner a luxury brand?
Yes. Bogner sits in the same tier as Moncler Grenoble and Fusalp for skiwear, and its main line uses cashmere, virgin wool, real down and lambskin. A Bogner Sport down ski jacket is an investment piece, while Fire+Ice is the more accessible way in. We compare the two big names in Bogner vs Moncler.
What to buy first
Start with what Bogner invented. A pair of stretch ski trousers such as the Hazel Softshell Ski Trousers in Navy is the classic first buy. Add a down ski jacket like the Naia Down Ski Jacket in Black, then a Norwegian-style knit such as the Carolyn Norwegian-Style Knit Jacket in Black for the evening. For the city, the Trisha Double-Faced Wool Coat in Camel shows the quieter side of the house. More ideas are in our Bogner Autumn Winter 2026 edit.
Where Bogner is designed
Bogner is still based in Munich, where the collections are designed. The house does not print a factory country on most pieces, so Coveti lists them as designed by Bogner in Munich. Bogner sizes its clothing in EU confection sizes, which Coveti lists in UK sizes: on the Bogner chart an EU 34 is a UK 8 and a US 4, and an EU 36 is a UK 10. The full conversion is in our Bogner size guide.
