Wrap Coats for Women: How to Choose, Tie and Wear a Wrap Coat
A wrap coat is a coat that crosses over at the front and closes with a belt instead of a full row of buttons, so you set the fit each time you tie it. The classic is a long wool wrap coat with kimono sleeves, and the best known is the camel hair Max Mara Manuela coat. The Max Mara collection at Coveti carries wrap coats from $1,460.

What is a wrap coat?
Strip a wrap coat back to its parts and you get three things: a front that overlaps generously, a belt that does the closing, and a soft shoulder that lets the body of the coat fall from the neck. Most have kimono sleeves cut in one with the body, which is why they sit so easily over a jumper.
That construction is why a wrap coat flatters so many figures. The belt marks a waist wherever you choose to put it, and the open lapel draws a long V down the front. Untie it and the same coat hangs straight and loose. Few shapes do two jobs this well, which is why it sits beside the double-breasted coat at the centre of the Max Mara coats guide.
A wrap coat is close cousin to the robe coat. The difference is mostly in the collar and the cut: a robe coat follows the line of a dressing gown, often with a shawl collar and no buttons at all, while a wrap coat can carry tailored lapels and a sharper shoulder. Max Mara uses both names, and some coats sit between the two. Our guide to robe coats for women covers the dressing-gown cut in detail, and our types of coats guide maps every other shape.
Belted versus unbelted: which wrap coat should you choose?
Every true wrap coat comes with a belt, so the real question is how you plan to wear it. If you like a defined waist, choose a coat with thread belt loops set at your natural waist, such as the Weekend Max Mara Pedale Wool Wrap Coat in Camel. If you prefer to leave the coat open, look for a heavier cloth that hangs straight on its own. Double broadcloth and double drap, like the ‘S Max Mara Peonie Long Double Wool Wrap Coat, keep their line untied.
A few coats blur the categories. The Weekend Resina Double-Breasted Wool Coat is cut long and wide and ties with a matching belt, so you can wear it buttoned like a classic overcoat on cold days and belted like a wrap on milder ones.
Wool, camel hair and cashmere: which fabric is best for a wrap coat?
Virgin wool is the workhorse. It holds a press, copes with rain better than finer fibres and keeps its shape after a winter of wear. Most Max Mara wrap coats on Coveti are 100% virgin wool, from the Weekend Pedale at $1,460 to the Max Mara Studio Loriana Wool Wrap Coat in Black, a new Fall Winter 2026 colour, at $1,930. For a full fabric primer, read our women’s wool coats guide.
Camel hair is softer and lighter for its warmth, with a gentle surface sheen. It is the fibre of the Manuela, which is 100% camel hair with a viscose lining. It needs more care than wool: brush it, rest it between wears and keep it out of heavy rain. The trade-offs are set out in our camel hair versus wool coats comparison.
Wool with cashmere and silk sits between the two. The Max Mara Studio Cles Wool, Cashmere and Silk Wrap Coat is 88% virgin wool, 6% silk and 6% cashmere, which keeps the structure of wool with a softer hand. Wool with alpaca gives a fuller, brushed surface, as on the Tempo (68% virgin wool, 32% alpaca). The ‘S Max Mara Miss Soft-Textured Wrap Coat is the outlier: a polyester jersey with a fluffy texture, lighter than any wool.
Which length of wrap coat suits you?
Long wrap coats fall to mid-calf and below. They are the warmest and the most dramatic, and they look best with straight trousers, a long skirt and boots. The Peonie, the Loriana and the ‘S Max Mara Penelope Long Wool Drap Wrap Coat in Hazelnut Brown are all long, and the Penelope answers the brown wrap coat search with a warm, earthy shade.
Midi wrap coats end around the knee to lower calf, which is the easiest length for daily wear, for driving and for petite frames. The Weekend Pedale is described as a midi. Short wrap coats stop at the hip to upper thigh; Max Mara cuts these as robe coats, such as the Ondina Short Wool Beaver Cloth Robe Coat, which ties with a matching belt.
How to tie a wrap coat belt
The side knot. Cross the fronts, take the belt round and tie a single loose knot at one hip, letting the ends hang. This is the classic camel coat look and the one most photographs show.
The back tie. Leave the front open, take the belt round the back and knot it behind you. The front falls straight while the back is gathered in, which slims the line without closing the coat.
The loop. Instead of a knot, fold the belt in half, pass it round the waist and pull the loose ends through the fold.
The pocket tuck. On mild days, slip each end of the belt into the side pockets. For more on finishing the outfit, our guide on how to style a camel coat works for any wrap coat colour.
How to fit a wrap coat over and under knitwear
Because a wrap coat is held by a belt, it forgives more than a buttoned coat, but the shoulders and the sleeves still need room. Kimono sleeves are cut in one with the body, so they have space for a chunky jumper. Set-in sleeves, as on the ‘S Max Mara Poldo, are slimmer and suit a fine knit underneath.
Try the coat over the thickest sweater you plan to wear with it. The fronts should still cross by a hand’s width when tied, and you should be able to lift your arms without the hem rising more than a few centimetres. If you plan to layer a blazer underneath, a long, loose cut like the Studio Nodo Reversible Wool Wrap Coat leaves the most room. Start with your usual Italian size and check the measurements on each product page; our Max Mara size guide has the full conversion chart.

Wrap coats around the world
United States and Canada. The US is the largest market for wrap coat searches, and black is the most searched colour. In New York, Chicago and Toronto, a long virgin wool wrap coat over a knit is the winter uniform; choose double cloth for wind.
United Kingdom and Europe. The UK is the second-largest market. Damp, mild winters suit a midi wool wrap coat that can be worn open on warmer days, and navy and grey sell well beside camel.
The Gulf. In Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, winter evenings are cool rather than cold, so a lighter wrap coat works for dinners, travel and desert nights. A long, loose cut gives modest cover over an abaya-friendly silhouette, and the Miss jersey coat is the lightest option.
Australia and Asia. Melbourne and Sydney winters fall in June to August, the opposite season to the northern hemisphere, and a midi wool wrap coat is enough for most days.
Coveti ships worldwide by DHL Express and FedEx International Priority, insured and signed for on delivery. Import duties are usually payable on arrival.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Max Mara wrap coat?
A Max Mara wrap coat is a coat with an overlapping front closed by a tie belt. The best known is the Manuela, a house classic in pure camel hair with a notched collar, side pockets and a belt. Weekend Max Mara, ‘S Max Mara and Max Mara Studio also make wrap coats in virgin wool and blends.
Is the Max Mara Manuela a wrap coat?
Yes. The Manuela is a belted wrap coat in 100% camel hair, with a notched collar and side pockets, and it ties closed at the waist. On Coveti it is listed as the Manuela Icon Coat, in camel, black and ultramarine, from $4,290.
How much is a Max Mara wrap coat?
On Coveti, Max Mara wrap coats start at $1,460 for the Weekend Max Mara Pedale in pure wool. ‘S Max Mara and Max Mara Studio wrap coats sit between $1,480 and $1,990, the Manuela is $4,290 and the runway Tempo is $6,490. Prices are shown in US dollars.
Do wrap coats keep you warm?
A wrap coat in heavy wool keeps you as warm as a buttoned coat, because the overlapping front is generous and the belt closes the gap. Choose double broadcloth and double drap for the coldest cities, and wear a scarf, since the open V neckline leaves the throat exposed.
Should a wrap coat be a size up?
Usually not. Wrap coats with kimono sleeves already have room for knitwear, so start with your normal Max Mara size. Size up only if you plan to wear a blazer underneath a coat with set-in sleeves. Max Mara uses Italian sizing: IT 40 is UK 8 and US 4.
