Robe Coats for Women: The Dressing-Gown Coat Explained

A robe coat is an outer coat cut like a dressing gown: loose and unstructured, usually with a shawl collar, no buttons and a tie belt at the waist. It slips on like a robe and closes by wrapping. The Max Mara Rialto Camel Robe Coat is a classic hooded version in pure camel hair, and the Max Mara collection at Coveti carries robe coats from $1,320.

Key facts

  • Definition: a beltable outer coat with the cut of a dressing gown, closed by wrapping and tying instead of buttons.
  • Typical details: a shawl collar and soft lapel, kimono sleeves, in-seam pockets and thread belt loops.
  • Not to be confused with: the changing robe worn at the beach and the pool; this guide covers the tailored fashion coat.
  • Max Mara lines with robe coats on Coveti: Weekend Max Mara, ‘S Max Mara, Max Mara Studio and Max Mara.
  • Fabrics in the current edit: virgin wool, camel hair, cashmere, wool and cashmere, wool with alpaca and cashmere, and sheepskin.
  • Price on Coveti: from $1,320 at Weekend Max Mara, $1,710 at ‘S Max Mara and $1,790 at Max Mara Studio, to $7,410 for pure cashmere.

What is a robe coat?

A robe coat takes the most relaxed garment in the wardrobe, the dressing gown, and builds it in coat cloth. The front has no buttons. It overlaps, the belt holds it, and the collar rolls in one soft line from the neck to the waist. That rolled shawl collar is the giveaway; on a tailored coat, the collar and lapel meet at a notch.

The cut is unstructured. There is no stiff interlining in the shoulder, the sleeves are often kimono sleeves cut in one with the body, and many Max Mara robe coats are unlined to keep them light. The ‘S Max Mara Anna Double Wool Robe Coat, new for Fall Winter 2026, has a shawl neck, kimono sleeves, a matching belt and no lining at all.

Because it is so soft, a robe coat moves with you. It looks right thrown on over jeans, and equally right over a silk dress for dinner. The Max Mara Manuela, the house’s camel hair belted coat, shares the same relaxed spirit; see the Max Mara coats guide for how the classics compare.

Robe coat versus wrap coat: what is the difference?

Every robe coat is a wrap coat, but not every wrap coat is a robe coat. Both close with a belt over an overlapping front. The robe coat is the softer, more domestic version: shawl collar, no buttons, unstructured shoulder. A wrap coat can be sharper, with notched lapels, set-in sleeves and even a hidden button at the neck.

In practice the house uses both terms loosely. The Max Mara Studio Cles is sold as a wrap coat but described as an enveloping robe coat, and the ‘S Max Mara Poldo is sold as a robe coat but described as a long wrap coat. Judge by the collar and the shoulder, not the name. Our guide to wrap coats for women covers the tailored side, including how to tie the belt.

Some robe coats borrow details from other coats. The Weekend Max Mara Operoso Double Wool-Blend Robe Coat adds a rain cape across the back and an overlapping rear slit from the trench coat. The Max Mara Nasello Glen Plaid Wool Robe Coat is tailored like a jacket with peak lapels and buttoned cuffs, but closes with a tie belt like a robe.

Which fabric should you choose for a robe coat?

Camel hair. The softest and most traditional. The Max Mara Rialto is 100% camel hair in a sable-look broadcloth, with a hood and patch pockets. Camel hair is light for its warmth and has a gentle sheen; read our camel hair versus wool coats comparison for the full trade-off.

Virgin wool. Tougher and easier to care for. Max Mara uses pure wool double broadcloth for the ‘S Max Mara Poldo Wool Broadcloth Robe Coat and double-faced wool for the Messi Double-Faced Wool Robe Coat, which has wide shawl lapels. Double-faced cloth has two finished sides, so the coat can go unlined. Our women’s wool coats guide explains the cloths.

Cashmere. The most luxurious, and the most delicate. The Max Mara Cashmere Robe Coat in Sand is hand-sewn from double-faced pure cashmere broadcloth, and the Max Mara Studio Ardea Long Cashmere Robe Coat brings pure cashmere to a lower price.

Blends. Wool and cashmere (70/30) gives softness with more resilience, as on the ‘S Max Mara Carisma Double Wool and Cashmere Robe Coat. The Max Mara Panda Wool, Alpaca and Cashmere Robe Coat mixes 64% virgin wool, 22% alpaca and 14% cashmere in a beaver cloth.

Sheepskin. The warmest. The Max Mara Martora Sheepskin Robe Coat is a long shearling robe with a nappa leather interior and a tie belt.

How to wear a robe coat

Over knitwear and denim. The robe coat was made for weekends. A cashmere crew neck, straight jeans and a loafer under a camel robe coat is the simplest outfit there is. Our Max Mara outfits guide has more combinations.

Over tailoring. For work, wear it over a trouser suit. Choose a robe coat with kimono sleeves for space over a blazer, and keep the belt loose so the jacket lapels do not bunch.

Over evening clothes. A black robe coat in wool broadcloth sits well over a slip dress and a long skirt, and the shawl collar frames jewellery at the neck.

Belt it, tie it behind, leave it open. A robe coat is designed to be tied loosely at the side. On milder days, wear it open and knot the belt behind you so it does not trail. A hooded robe coat, such as the Studio Newmang Hooded Wool Robe Coat, is the practical choice for drizzle.

For sizing, start with your usual Italian size: robe coats are cut loose by design. Max Mara uses Italian sizing, where IT 40 is UK 8 and US 4; see our Max Mara size guide.

Robe coats around the world

United Kingdom and Europe. The UK is the largest market for robe coat searches, ahead of the US. British buyers favour a midi robe coat in wool that copes with damp weather and can be worn open on mild days. In Paris and Milan, the long camel robe coat over a knit is a winter staple.

United States and Canada. American buyers lean to longer, warmer robe coats in double wool and cashmere for the cold of the East Coast and Canada. A hood adds practical cover in snow.

The Gulf. In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, an unlined robe coat in wool, cashmere and silk is light enough for winter evenings and travel. Its long, loose wrap gives modest cover, and it layers well over a flowing dress.

Australia and Asia. In Sydney and Melbourne, where winter runs June to August, a midi robe coat in wool is enough for most days. In Seoul and Tokyo, long robe coats sit over thick knits in sharp, dry cold.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Max Mara robe coat?

A Max Mara robe coat is a coat cut like a dressing gown, with an overlapping front closed by a tie belt and usually a shawl collar. The house makes them across Weekend Max Mara, ‘S Max Mara, Max Mara Studio and the main line, in wool, camel hair, cashmere and sheepskin.

What is the difference between a robe coat and a wrap coat?

Both close with a belt over an overlapping front. A robe coat is the softer version, cut like a dressing gown with a shawl collar, no buttons and an unstructured shoulder. A wrap coat can be more tailored, with notched lapels and set-in sleeves. Max Mara uses the two names loosely.

How much is a Max Mara robe coat?

On Coveti, Max Mara robe coats start at $1,320 for the Weekend Max Mara Operoso. ‘S Max Mara and Max Mara Studio robe coats run from about $1,710 to $4,870, the camel hair Rialto is $4,070 and the pure cashmere robe coat is $7,410. Prices are in US dollars.

Is a robe coat warm enough for winter?

A robe coat in double wool, camel hair and cashmere is warm enough for most winters, because the front overlaps deeply. In very cold cities, choose a lined version with a hood, and add a scarf, since the shawl collar leaves the neck open.

Is a robe coat the same as a changing robe?

No. A changing robe is a waterproof, fleece-lined garment for getting changed at the beach and the pool. A robe coat is a tailored outer coat in wool, cashmere and camel hair, cut like a dressing gown and worn in town.

Should I size up in a Max Mara robe coat?

Usually not. Robe coats are cut loose with room for knitwear, so take your usual size. Max Mara uses Italian sizing: IT 40 is UK 8 and US 4, and IT 42 is UK 10 and US 6. Check the measurements on each product page.
