How to Wear a Knit Dress: Fit, Fabric and Styling by Season

A knit dress is a dress made from knitted fabric instead of woven cloth, so it stretches, follows the body and recovers its shape as you move; the best ones are cut in a dense jacquard, compact knit and rib that hold their line from neckline to hem. Among the new midi dresses at Coveti, the Ulla Johnson Pre-Spring 2027 knits are some of the most considered we have seen this year, and they sit alongside the wider story in our Ulla Johnson knitwear guide. To shop every designer at once, start with sweater and knit dresses.

Key facts

  • A knit dress is made from interlocking loops of yarn, which is why it stretches and recovers its shape.
  • A jacquard knit has its pattern knitted into the fabric instead of printed on the surface.
  • Lurex is a metallic yarn knitted in with the main fibre to give a knit dress a light shimmer.
  • The Ulla Johnson Pre-Spring 2027 knit dresses are jacquard, compact knit, rayon and Lurex blends, all labelled dry clean only.

What is a knit dress?

Woven fabric is made by crossing threads at right angles on a loom. Knitted fabric is made from interlocking loops of a single yarn, which is why it gives when you pull it and springs back when you let go. That stretch is the whole appeal: a knit dress can skim the body closely without zips, darts and boning, and it feels more like a favourite jumper than a frock.

The catch is that cheap knit sags. Loose, thin knits grow at the seat and the elbows by lunchtime. The knit dresses worth buying are made from a tighter construction, a yarn blend with some memory in it, and a cut that uses the knit itself to create shape.

The four knit types to know

Jacquard

A jacquard knit has its pattern knitted in, not printed on. The machine selects which yarn shows on the face of the fabric stitch by stitch, so stripes, florals and textures are part of the cloth. Jacquard tends to be thicker and more stable than a plain knit, which is why it suits a knit midi dress that needs to hold a tiered skirt.

Compact knit

A compact knit is knitted tightly from a yarn that has been compacted during spinning, so the surface is smooth and the fabric resists bagging. It is the knit to choose if you want a dress that looks almost tailored.

Rib

Rib alternates raised and recessed columns of stitches. It has the most stretch of any common knit and pulls in naturally, which is why it shows up at cuffs, necklines and hems even on dresses that are not rib all over.

Lurex blend

Lurex is a metallic yarn knitted in alongside the main fibre. A small proportion gives a knit dress a glint that reads as evening without any sequins, and it is the easiest way to take a knit from the office to a dinner.

How should a knit dress fit?

A good knit dress should touch the body without gripping it. Look at three places in the mirror. Across the bust, the knit should lie flat with no horizontal pull lines. At the waist and hip, it should follow your shape without clinging to the line of your underwear. At the hem, it should hang straight; a hem that rides up when you walk means the dress is too small. If you are between sizes in a structured knit, the larger size usually looks better, because a knit that is stretched to its limit loses the pattern and the drape.

Ulla Johnson cuts in US sizes and Coveti lists the UK equivalent: a US 0 is a UK 4, a US 4 is a UK 8 and a US 6 is a UK 10. Knitwear runs P to XL, with P listed as XS. The brand gives no advice to size up on any piece in this drop, so take your usual size. The full charts are in our Ulla Johnson size guide. The knit dresses in this drop are cut in numeric sizes, while the knit tops and pullovers follow the lettered scale.

The best knit dresses: Pre-Spring 2027 picks

1. Nadine Knit Dress in Noir and Gardenia

Jacquard in black and gardenia white, sleeveless with a rounded neckline and a tiered, fringed skirt. The vertical stripes lengthen the body before the fringe takes over at the hem, and the cut is sculpted throughout.

2. Corinthia Knit Dress in Noir

A black compact knit midi with lace-like floral jacquard motifs placed at the shoulders, waist and skirt, plus scalloped edges. It is structured throughout, so it behaves like a tailored dress.

3. Amaia Knit Dress in Sienna and Rose Gold

A long-sleeved Lurex blend in sienna red with rose gold, plain and streamlined until the wavy mesh insets at the midi hem. The evening knit in this edit.

4. Amaia Knit Dress in Noir and Gold

The same Amaia shape in black with gold, for anyone who wants the shimmer in a quieter colour.

5. Maribel Knit Dress in Garnet

Garnet red in a viscose and nylon knit, with opaque geometric eyelet motifs, a textured band at the bodice and a drop waist that falls into a softly flared midi skirt. Long sleeves make it a cold-weather pick.

6. Audrey Cami Knit Dress in Champagne

Champagne cream with black eyelets, a V-neckline and slim straps. Columns of eyelet motifs meet below the bust and the skirt is gently pleated.

7. Tahlia Knit Mini Dress in Noir

Black compact knit with short sleeves, floral jacquard motifs across the shoulders and the pleated skirt, and small scalloped edges at sleeve and hem.

8. Makila Knit Cardigan in Clove

A clove brown merino wool cardigan from Fall 2026 with a shawl collar and a cape overlay. Worn open over any sleeveless knit dress here, it carries the look into a cold morning.

How to wear a knit dress across the seasons

The same knit dress can work for most of the year if you change what goes with it. A few rules that hold up:

  • Spring: a sleeveless jacquard with bare legs and a flat sandal, and a light jacket over the shoulders for the evening.
  • Summer: the cooler cotton blends in the warmth, with minimal jewellery so the knit texture does the talking.
  • Autumn: a long-sleeved knit with a knee boot and a cardigan, keeping colours close so the outfit reads as one line.
  • Winter: sheer black tights, an ankle boot and a long coat; a Lurex knit for parties.
  • Belt with care: most structured knits are already shaped at the waist, so a belt can fight the cut.
  • Choose smooth underlayers: a seamless slip stops a knit catching on tights.

How to care for a knit dress

Every knit dress in this edit is labelled dry clean only, and that is worth following, because viscose and rayon blends can shrink and distort in water. Between cleans, air the dress on a flat surface instead of a hanger, which stretches the shoulders. Fold it for storage, with tissue in the folds of a fringed hem. If the knit picks up a small pull, ease it back through from the inside with a blunt needle; never cut it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a knit dress?

A knit dress is made from knitted fabric, built from interlocking loops of yarn instead of woven threads. It stretches and recovers, so it can follow the body closely without zips and darts.

Is a jacquard dress a knit?

A jacquard can be knitted and woven; the word describes a pattern made in the fabric itself. The jacquard dresses in this edit are knitted, with stripes and florals worked into the cloth.

How should a knit midi dress fit?

It should touch the body without gripping it, lie flat across the bust and hang straight at the hem. A hem that rides up when you walk means the dress is too small.

Can you wear a knit dress in summer?

Yes. Choose a sleeveless cut in a cotton blend, wear it with bare legs and a flat sandal, and keep jewellery light.

How do you stop a knit dress stretching?

Store it folded instead of on a hanger, air it flat between wears and follow the dry clean label, since viscose and rayon blends can distort in water.
