Magda Butrym Size Guide: How the Label Actually Fits

Magda Butrym is sized in European numbers, 32 through 42, and that single fact causes most of the hesitation before checkout. What the conversion cannot tell you is how a particular piece behaves once it is on, and that varies more across this collection than the size label suggests.

Here is how the label actually fits, drawn from the brand’s own sizing notes across the current season.

The label runs from EU 32 to EU 42. There is no EU 44 and no EU 46 in ready-to-wear, so the range tops out at a UK 14.

Does Magda Butrym run true to size?

Yes. The house states it plainly on the pieces where it comments at all: this piece fits true to size, we recommend you get your regular size. Across the current season the brand issues no instruction to size up and no instruction to size down on any garment. Take your usual size and the label will behave.

That is the short answer. The longer answer is that Magda Butrym describes the shape of a garment rather than correcting your size, and those shape notes are what you should read before choosing.

The three fits, and what they mean on the body

Almost every piece carries one of three descriptions. Across the current collection the split is roughly three quarters regular, one fifth slim, and a small handful oversized.

• Regular fit. The default, and by far the largest group. Tailoring, most dresses and the knitwear sit here. Your usual size, no adjustment.
• Slim fit. Roughly one in five pieces, and it is worth taking seriously. The fitted draped blouses and the strapless corseted tops are cut close through the bodice with darting that holds a shape. If you carry your width across the bust and shoulder, this is the group where a size up buys comfort without losing the line.
• Oversized fit. A small group, mostly the cape-style outerwear and the sweat pieces. These are designed with the volume built in, so sizing up compounds something the pattern already did.

A worked example. The cape-style coat with scarf in beige is described by the house as oversized, and it is meant to fall away from the body with the integrated scarf carrying the weight. The trench coat with extended collar in grey is a regular fit and layers over knitwear at your usual size. Two coats, two different instincts, one size on the label.

The model reference

Where the brand photographs a piece, the model is 177cm to 178cm and wears an EU 34, which is a UK 6. A few pieces are shown on an EU 32 and a few on an EU 36. If you are shorter than the model, midi lengths will read longer on you and the cropped jackets will sit closer to the waist, which is usually flattering rather than a problem.

Sizing by category

• Tailoring and outerwear. Regular fit, true to size, cut to layer over a fine knit. The blazers have structured shoulder inserts, so the shoulder seam is the measurement that matters most.
• Jersey tops. The knotted jersey pieces have real stretch and forgive a lot. Take your usual size for a close line.
• Knitwear. Cashmere and wool, regular fit, and it relaxes slightly with wear. Do not size up expecting shrinkage.
• Corseted and draped dresses. The slim group. Structured through the bodice with boning and darting, so measure the bust rather than guessing.
• Trousers and denim. Sized in the same EU ladder rather than a waist measurement, so convert from your dress size, not your jeans.
