The H&M x Magda Butrym collection: what it was and what to buy now

On 24 April 2025 H&M launched a 45-piece collection with Magda Butrym: womenswear, accessories and jewellery built on the rose, launched online and in selected stores, and it sold through fast enough that a year and a half later the searches for it still outnumber most of the house’s own product names. Euronews described dresses decorated with petals, wide-shouldered suits and structured oversized coats, halter tops, a denim corset, mini and maxi dresses, sequin sets and bodysuits with three-dimensional roses, a red ruffled gown like a bouquet, a lace dress and a deep burgundy leather coat, and quoted the designer on the rose as the perfect symbol of womanhood. What the collection was

A translation of the house into H&M prices: the rose on a mini dress, the hourglass blazer with wide shoulders, the corset in denim, the ruffled gown, sunglasses and rose earrings. WWD ran a gallery on launch day; Euronews called the theme Slavic romanticism and noted the pieces drew on the atelier’s archive.

Why it sold out

Because the ideas are the house’s own and the house does not discount. A rose dress, a corset and a burgundy leather coat at H&M prices was the first time most people could buy the look, and the collection was gone within days in most sizes.

The originals

Every H&M piece has a mainline parent. The rose dresses: the dress guide. The corset, in cotton-silk and wool rather than denim: the corset page. The leather coat and the belted jackets: the leather page. The sunglasses: the sunglasses page. The rose earrings: the earrings page.

The difference

The mainline is silk-lined, boned and padded where the H&M pieces were polyester and jersey; the leather is sheep and calf; the roses are formed by hand in the atelier. The prices reflect that, and so does the way the pieces wear over years.

Buying the H&M pieces now

They resell second-hand at a premium. If you want the look rather than the label, the mainline rib tank, the swim and the jewellery are the affordable doors into the house itself.
