Who is Magda Butrym? The designer, the house and the rose
Magda Butrym is a Polish fashion designer and the founder of the Warsaw fashion house that carries her name. She was born Magdalena Aleksandra Butrym on 17 February 1985 in Zabrze, in Upper Silesia, and moved to Warsaw after school to study at the International School of Costume and Fashion Design. At twenty she was a stylist at TVP, the Polish public broadcaster, and she worked with Joanna Przetakiewicz at La Mania before a first label, Portofino, launched in 2009 and closed soon after. She founded Magda Butrym in Warsaw in 2014. Twelve years later the house sells ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, jewellery and eyewear, dressed Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa and Demi Moore, made a 45-piece collection for H&M, and in September 2026 opened its first New York flagship and showed on the New York Fashion Week runway for the first time. The designer
Butrym came to fashion through styling rather than a design school in Paris: television wardrobe at TVP, then the La Mania studio, then her own first attempt with Portofino in 2009. Polish Wikipedia records that a stylist she dressed, Beata Sadowska, won a Newsweek best-dressed award for her work in 2007. The house that finally stuck, in 2014, took her own name and stayed in Warsaw.
The house
Magda Butrym is a Warsaw label built on a few ideas repeated well: a fitted, sculpted silhouette that pads the hip to draw an hourglass, a fabric rose formed by hand and applied to a shoulder, a waist and a shoe, hand crochet in the summer collections, and references to Polish craft and vintage couture. FashionUnited summed it up in 2026 as sculptural silhouettes, hand-finished details and recurring motifs like roses and crochet. The line now runs from dresses and tailoring to leather, swim, bags, shoes, jewellery and acetate sunglasses.
The rose
The flower is the signature. It sits on the dresses, the swimsuits, the slingbacks and the bag handles, and the designer described it, when the H&M collection was announced, as the perfect symbol of womanhood. The signature rose page tells its story.
Who wears it
Polish Wikipedia lists Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Hailey Bieber, Dakota Johnson, Natalie Portman, Sydney Sweeney, Dua Lipa and the tennis player Iga Swiatek among the women who have worn the label; WWD named Dua Lipa, Hailey Bieber and Demi Moore in 2026, with Moore on the front row of the New York show. The who-wears page has the sourced list.
The business
The house is run by chief executive Jakub Czarnota, who told WWD ahead of the New York opening that the United States is its number-one direct-to-consumer market. It sells through its own site and boutiques in Warsaw and, since September 2026, New York, and through luxury retailers; the where-to-buy page lists them. The H&M collaboration of April 2025 put a 45-piece version of the house into high-street stores worldwide.
2026: New York
On 21 July 2026 FashionUnited and CPP-Luxury reported the first New York flagship, a three-level, 4,300 square foot space at 170 Mercer Street in SoHo designed by the Stockholm studio Stamuli, opening in early September ahead of the brand’s first New York Fashion Week show on 13 September. WWD’s review of that Spring 2027 show reported the store open, Demi Moore front row and a collection built on sheer layers, lingerie details and apron dressing, with the designer citing the Polish artist Natalia LL. The New York page has the detail.
