Who Is Shona Joy Thatcher? The Founder of Shona Joy
Shona Joy Thatcher is the Australian fashion designer who founded the label Shona Joy in Sydney in 2000. Born in Melbourne and trained in textile design, Thatcher started the business with hand-painted designs sold at market stalls in Bondi Beach and Paddington, and built it into one of Australia’s best-known names for occasion, bridesmaid and bridal dressing. The label marked its 25th anniversary in 2025.

Early career
Thatcher studied textile design and worked as a design assistant at the Australian labels Charlie Brown and Marcs before going out alone. Market stalls came first: in a 2017 interview with FBI Fashion College, Thatcher described selling at the Spitalfields and Portobello markets in London, as well as the Bondi Beach and Paddington markets in Sydney.
Starting Shona Joy
The label began in 2000 with hand-painted designs. As Thatcher told Forbes in 2020, an early capsule of hand-painted t-shirts made for Belinda Seper’s Corner Shop in Paddington caught the eye of the model Christy Turlington, who bought them in every colour. The first full collection then sold into David Jones, which still stocks the label today.
Building the label
Under Thatcher, Shona Joy grew from market stalls into an international business. By 2017 it had more than 150 Australian stockists and had begun expanding into the American and Asian markets. By its 20th anniversary in 2020 it was producing five ready-to-wear collections a year, and the brand’s FY21/22 impact report counted 189 wholesale accounts in 21 countries. Thatcher told Forbes the label quickly became a market leader in bridesmaid dressing, and its La Lune event collection and bridal range are now central to it.
Recent years
In June 2021 Shona Joy showed a virtual runway at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week, filmed on Green Island at Manyana on the New South Wales coast. In September 2023 the label staged its own runway, Le Long de la Côte, at the Overseas Passenger Terminal on Sydney Harbour, and the same year it opened its first international pop-up, in Dubai. In November 2024 the company promoted its chief operating officer to chief executive, with Thatcher continuing as founder. The full story is in our Shona Joy history.
The Shona Joy Thatcher style
The label still reflects its founder’s taste: feminine dressing in a mostly neutral palette, with fluid satins, lace and soft draping. It is made for occasions, weddings above all, and for people who want to wear a good dress more than once.
