0

Shona Joy started at Sydney’s Bondi Beach and Paddington markets in 2000, and its feminine occasion dressing suits the Australian spring racing season. With the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington now days away, here is what to wear to each race day, built from the current collection at Shona Joy at Coveti, plus notes on millinery, shoes for the lawn and what to bring. For a broader edit of the occasion, read what to wear to the Melbourne Cup, and shop more designer midi dresses.

The Melbourne Cup Carnival, day by day

The Carnival at Flemington runs over four days in early November. In 2026 that means Derby Day on Saturday 31 October, Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November, Oaks Day on Thursday 5 November and Stakes Day on Saturday 7 November. Each day has a long standing style tradition. These are traditions, not rules; always check the Victoria Racing Club’s current dress code for the enclosure you are booked into.

Derby Day: black and white

Derby Day is traditionally the most formal day, and racegoers dress in black and white. Choose a sharp silhouette with a statement headpiece.

1. Campbell Bow Backless Mini Dress in Black

stretch cotton (56% cotton, 40% nylon, 4% elastane), lined. Round sleeveless neckline, a fitted bodice with a gathered yoke, an open back with an adjustable bow, side pockets and a centre back split. Fit: fitted through the bodice, relaxed through the skirt. Add a white structured headpiece and white slingbacks.

2. Irena Hourglass Single Breasted Blazer with Belt in Bone

Recycled polyester, viscose and elastane suiting with a notched lapel, single button, jet pockets and a removable wide belt. Fit: relaxed, worn slightly oversized with a slight hourglass shape. Wear it over the Campbell mini, belted, for a black and white look.

3. Eniko Lace Open Back Mini Dress in Black

Matte finish satin with lace at the neckline and the asymmetrical mini hem, a round halter neckline and an open cowl back. Fit: slim, designed to skim the body.

Melbourne Cup Day: colour

Cup Day is the big public holiday race, and colour is the tradition. Bright prints, strong single colours and bold millinery all belong.

4. Elsa Panelled Strapless Maxi Dress in Espresso Floral

Recycled polyester twill with a blue floral print on espresso brown. Strapless, a fitted bodice with darts, a centre back split and a maxi skirt. Fit: slim. Add a blue headband and tan sandals.

5. Elsa Shift Mini Dress in Espresso Floral

The same printed twill in a shift mini with a round neckline and buttoned flap pockets. Fit: slim. A shorter option for a full day on your feet.

6. Savanna Racer Back Maxi Dress in Chilli

satin acetate (55% polyester, 45% acetate), lined. Low scoop neckline, low T bar racer back and a loose maxi skirt in a true red. Fit: relaxed, designed to sit away from the body.

Oaks Day: florals and soft colour

Oaks Day is traditionally the day for pastels, florals and the most romantic looks of the Carnival.

7. Simona Lace Mini Dress in Medallion

Matte finish satin in a medallion print with lace at the square neckline and hem, adjustable straps and a mini length. Fit: classic slip silhouette, designed to sit slightly away from the body.

8. Omri Panelled Bustier Maxi Dress in Blue Stripe

100% cotton in a blue and white stripe. Scoop neckline, gathered underbust with piping, a dropped waist with gathers and side pockets. Fit: fitted through the bodice, dropped waist with a gathered skirt.

9. Marlowe Linen Blend Bustier Maxi Dress in Ecru

Linen blend (88% linen, 12% nylon) in Ecru, cotton lined. Scoop neckline, gathered underbust, a dropped waist with gathers and side pockets. Fit: fitted through the bodice. Keep a soft ecru away from ivory headwear so it does not read bridal.

Stakes Day: relaxed and easy

Stakes Day closes the Carnival and is the most relaxed of the four. Separates and sets are perfect.

10. Omri Draped Shirt Mini Dress in Blue Stripe

100% cotton stripe. Shirt collar and placket, draped tucks at the waist and a wrap with internal and external ties. Fit: slim, fitted through the waist.

11. Asher Wide Leg Pant in Berry

Lightweight suiting with a high rise, buttoned jet pockets and a wide flared leg in Berry. Pair it with the Asher Off Shoulder Fitted Top in Berry for a tonal suit look.

Shoes for the lawn

Flemington is grass, and stilettos sink. Choose a block heel, a platform and a wedge, and pack a flat foldable pair for the walk back to the station. Keep heel caps in your clutch. A mini and a midi dress make walking the lawn easier than a floor length gown.

Millinery

Headwear is part of the tradition at the Carnival. A headband suits the shorter hems of the Campbell and Eniko minis; a structured percher suits the Elsa maxi; a wide brim suits the Oaks Day stripes and linen. Match the headpiece to one colour in the outfit, not every colour.

What to bring

A small crossbody bag keeps your hands free for a glass and a form guide. Bring sunscreen, a light layer for the late afternoon wind, and a long scarf such as the Riverton Scarf in Bandana Print, a bandana print in matte satin that ties as a headscarf and neckerchief.

How Shona Joy sizing works

Shona Joy cuts in Australian sizes, and an AU size carries the same number as a UK size, so an AU8 is a UK 8. Coveti lists every style in UK sizes, and the size guide on each product page converts UK sizing to US, Italian, French and German sizes. Read the brand’s fit note before you choose: “designed to sit away from the body” leaves room, “slim fit, designed to skim the body” follows your shape without clinging, and “fitted style” sits close everywhere. Where the brand gives a sizing instruction, follow it. It recommends sizing up on the La Lune Lace Back when you are between sizes, sizing down on the La Lune Strapless Column, and sizing up on the Lambent bodysuit.
