Brown Bridesmaid Dresses: Shona Joy in Espresso, Ristretto and Coffee

0

Shona Joy makes brown bridesmaid dresses in three shades that work together: Espresso, a deep chocolate brown in La Lune satin; Ristretto, a brown so dark it reads almost black by evening; and Coffee, a warmer, reddish chocolate with a high shine. The new arrivals at Coveti in October 2026 add the La Lune Ruched Halter and the La Lune Strapless Column in Espresso, the Miro Slinky Jersey Cape Maxi Dress in Ristretto and the Savanna satin set in Coffee. With the Espresso and Ristretto pieces we already carry, a bridal party can dress entirely in brown and still give every bridesmaid a different neckline, fabric and fit. Fabric and fit details come from Shona Joy’s own product notes.

Why brown bridesmaid dresses work

Brown has become the grown up alternative to black at weddings. It is rich enough for an evening reception, soft enough for a garden ceremony and flattering on most skin tones because it has warmth where black has none. It also photographs beautifully against ivory, green foliage and candlelight. Shona Joy’s browns lean warm, so they pair naturally with gold jewellery, rust and terracotta flowers, dried grasses and creamy roses.

La Lune Ruched Halter Maxi Dress in Espresso

The La Lune Ruched Halter Maxi Dress in Espresso ties at the neck with long, wide halter straps and opens at the waist with a cut out. The skirt is cut on the bias, the fit is close through the bust and slim through the body, and the fabric is La Lune’s soft touch satin, 58% LENZING ECOVERO viscose and 42% viscose. In Espresso the satin catches the light in deep bronze highlights, which gives the dress far more life than a flat brown would have.

La Lune Strapless Column Maxi Dress in Espresso

The La Lune Strapless Column Maxi Dress in Espresso is the structured choice. A built in bustier supports the bust under a relaxed outer layer, and the satin falls straight as a column. Shona Joy suggests sizing down if you are between sizes so the bustier sits firmly. It measures 136cm from the top of the bust to the hem on an AU8. The clean line suits a modern venue and a maid of honour who wants to stand apart from the group in the same colour.

More La Lune in Espresso

Two more La Lune styles in Espresso complete a full set of necklines. The La Lune Lace Back Maxi Dress in Espresso has a cowl neckline and a lace up back that adjusts to the body, and the La Lune Cowl Back Maxi Dress in Espresso drapes low at the back. For a bridesmaid who would rather not wear a dress, the La Lune Flared Sleeve Belted Blazer in Espresso and the La Lune Bias Cut Pant in Espresso make a satin suit in exactly the same shade.

Miro Slinky Jersey Cape Maxi Dress in Ristretto

The Miro Slinky Jersey Cape Maxi Dress in Ristretto brings a different texture. It is cut from a slinky jersey of 91% viscose and 9% elastane, with a high neckline, a cape draped sleeve, a V panel, cut outs at the sides of the bodice and a gathered, draped maxi skirt. It is lined, slim and designed to skim the body. Ristretto is the darkest of the browns, so it suits an evening wedding and a bridesmaid who would normally choose black.

Two more Miro styles come in Ristretto: the Miro Slinky Jersey Plunged Maxi Dress and the Miro Slinky Jersey Maxi Dress. Jersey is the most forgiving fabric in the Shona Joy range to wear, to travel with and to dance in.

Ristretto dresses in viscose and stretch cotton

For a softer, more romantic brown, the Amina Flared Sleeve Plunged Maxi Dress in Ristretto and the Amina Off Shoulder Blouson Maxi Dress in Ristretto are made in light, airy viscose. For more structure, the Campbell Fitted Drop Waist Maxi Dress in Ristretto uses Shona Joy’s stretch cotton blend, which holds a sculpted shape. The Emilie Gathered Maxi Dress with Beads in Ristretto adds beading for a maid of honour, and the Campbell Strapless Bubble Maxi Dress in Espresso gives a fuller skirt in the lighter brown.

Savanna satin in Coffee

Coffee is the warmest brown in the range, with a red undertone and a lustrous shine. It comes as a two piece rather than a dress: the Savanna Scoop Neck Top in Coffee and the Savanna Bias Pant in Coffee, both in satin of 55% polyester and 45% acetate. The top is a loose, longline scoop neck with thick straps that pulls on without a zip, and the pant has a high rise, a concealed elasticated waistband and a slim leg. Together they make a sleek alternative for a bridesmaid who prefers pants, and they work again afterwards as separates.

A printed brown for the maid of honour

The Elsa Panelled Strapless Maxi Dress sets large blue flowers on an espresso ground. It is cut from a heavyweight recycled polyester satin twill with a fitted, darted bodice, a strapless neckline and a centre back split. Among a row of plain brown dresses, a single print marks out the maid of honour without changing the palette.

How to build a brown bridal party

  • Tonal. Mix Espresso, Ristretto and Coffee for a layered, expensive looking palette. Put the darkest shade at the ends of the line.
  • One shade, many shapes. Keep everyone in Espresso La Lune and let each bridesmaid choose the neckline: halter, strapless, lace back and cowl back.
  • Brown and gold. Add the La Lune Lace Back Maxi Dress in Gold for one attendant. Pale gold lifts the browns and looks warm in candlelight.
  • Mixed fabrics. Satin, jersey and stretch cotton read differently in photographs, so keep fabrics consistent if you want a uniform look, and mix them only when the colours are close.

Fit and care

Shona Joy uses Australian sizing, which matches UK sizing. The La Lune satin and the Amina viscose ask for a cold hand wash and drying flat in the shade, and the La Lune styles are also dry cleanable. The Savanna satin is dry clean only. Dark satin shows water marks less than pale satin, but it still marks, so steam rather than iron and keep the dresses covered until the ceremony. Our Shona Joy fit guide explains how each fabric sizes.
