Solace London Size Guide: UK, US and EU Sizes with Body Measurements

Solace London makes every dress in UK sizes 4 to 16, which convert to US 0 to 12 and EU 32 to 44. A UK 10 fits a 90 cm bust, 71 cm waist and 100 cm low hip. Most styles are true to size, but boned gowns run firm, so check each style’s fit note before you choose.

Solace London does not publish a standalone size page (its size guide address leads to a 404 page), so the chart below is taken from the size table on the brand’s own product pages. It is a body chart: the measurements are yours, not the garment’s.

Solace London size chart (body measurements)

UK size Bust (cm) Waist (cm) Low hip (cm) Bust (in) Waist (in) Low hip (in)
UK 4 80 61 90 31.5 24 35.4
UK 6 82.5 63.5 92.5 32.5 25 36.4
UK 8 85 66 95 33.5 26 37.4
UK 10 90 71 100 35.4 28 39.4
UK 12 95 76 105 37.4 29.9 41.3
UK 14 100 81 110 39.4 31.9 43.3
UK 16 105 86 115 41.3 33.9 45.3

Two things stand out. First, the steps are not even. From UK 4 to UK 8 the chart moves in 2.5 cm steps at the bust, waist and hip, and from UK 8 upwards it moves in 5 cm steps. If you are a UK 8 at the bust and a UK 10 at the hip, the gap between those two sizes is wider than it looks. Second, the hip is a low hip, measured around the fullest part of the seat, not at the hip bone.

How to measure yourself

  • Bust: around the fullest part, with the tape level across your back. Wear the bra you plan to wear with the dress, which matters a lot for strapless styles.
  • Waist: around the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the navel. Breathe out normally.
  • Low hip: around the fullest part of your seat, with your feet together.

If two measurements point to different sizes, choose by the part of the dress that has the least give. On a boned strapless gown that is the bust and waist. On a column in stretch knit crepe it is usually the hip.

Is Solace London true to size?

Mostly, yes. Every style we carry is cut to the same body chart, and the brand’s fit notes describe the intended shape rather than telling you to change size. Where the advice differs is between sizes, and it follows the fabric:

Fabric and build Fit note on the product page If you are between sizes Styles at Coveti
Twill and bonded crepe, boned bodice Sculpts the body with minimal stretch Size up for comfort Dandridge, Reynolds, Ryder, Martine
Stretch knit crepe Sculpts the body with stretch through the fabric Size down for a closer fit Lang, Olivia, Nanette, Audran
Lightweight crepe, satin drape Skims the body with minimal stretch Usual size Newman, Seldon, Corday
Embellished crepe kaftan Falls away from the body Size down for a closer fit Delano

The logic is simple once you see it. A boned bodice in a cloth with no stretch cannot ease out, so the brand suggests the larger size if you are on the line. A stretch knit crepe will relax as you wear it, so the smaller size keeps the sculpted line.

Fit notes on the styles we stock

Boned and strapless

The Dandridge Maxi Dress has a boned bodice in medium weight twill and is designed to skim the body. Solace London suggests your usual size, sizing up if you are between sizes. The Reynolds Maxi Dress in bonded crepe is closer still, a corseted strapless shape with halter straps, and takes the same advice. Strapless gowns depend on the bust and waist being right, so measure those twice.

Stretch columns

The Lang Maxi Dress is a body-conscious column in stretch knit crepe with a capped sleeve and moulded neckline. The Olivia Maxi Dress is a long-sleeved high-neck column with a waterfall drape at the waist. For both, the brand suggests your usual size, sizing down if you are between sizes for a closer fit.

Off the shoulder

Off-the-shoulder necklines sit on the upper arm, so the bodice has to grip without straps. The Ryder Maxi Dress is a column with a moulded scooped neckline in bonded crepe, and the size-up advice applies. If your shoulders are broad for your size, the larger size is the safer choice.

One shoulder and draped

Draped styles are the most forgiving. The Seldon Maxi Dress skims the body in a lightweight crepe with a single long sleeve split to the elbow, so your usual size will fit.

Embellished styles

Crystal-embellished fabrics do not stretch at all, whatever the base cloth. The Swanson Maxi Dress is a one-shoulder maxi in fully embellished twill, designed to sit close to the body, and the brand suggests sizing up if you are between sizes. Expect a firm fit through the waist, where the pleats sit.

Bust fit

Most Solace London fitting problems start at the bust, and the chart shows why. Between UK 8 and UK 10 the bust jumps 5 cm, from 85 to 90 cm, so a bust that falls in between has no exact size. On a boned strapless bodice in twill, which has minimal stretch, choose by the bust. If your bust says UK 10 and your waist says UK 8, take the UK 10 and have a tailor take in the waist. On stretch knit crepe styles such as the Lang, the fabric gives across the bust, so the brand’s size-down advice still holds.

Measure the bust in the bra you will wear on the night. A strapless bra sits differently from an everyday one, and on a boned bodice that difference can be a whole size.

Sleeves and shoulders

Should you size up for a long-sleeved Solace London style? Only on the tailored ones, and only if your shoulders and upper arms are your widest point. The Olivia is cut in stretch knit crepe, so the sleeve moves with the arm and your usual size works. The Deacon has an exaggerated shoulder with shoulder pads, in a woven crepe with minimal stretch. The Martine pairs long sleeves with a boned corseted bodice, and for it the brand suggests sizing up if you are between sizes, for a more comfortable fit.

When you try a long-sleeved style on, lift your arms and cross them in front of you. If the sleeve pulls across the upper back, the next size up will be easier through a long dinner. Length is the simpler problem: a tailor can shorten a plain sleeve at the cuff. Blouson styles such as the Sedgewick are loose through the bodice and the least fussy to fit. Our Solace London long sleeve dresses guide goes through each sleeve shape.

Sizing from outside the UK

Solace London sizes every dress on the UK scale, wherever you buy it. In Australia, women’s dress sizes broadly match UK numbers, so an Australian 10 is usually a Solace London UK 10. In the US and Canada, use the US column above, and across Europe the EU column. If you shop from the UAE and Saudi Arabia, the sites you use may show UK, EU and US sizes side by side, so start from the body chart in centimetres, find your UK size, then convert. Our guide to Solace London in Dubai and the Gulf has more for shoppers in the region.

Worked examples

Charts are easier with real numbers. Here are three common cases and what we would choose.

  • Bust 88 cm, waist 69 cm, low hip 98 cm. Between UK 8 and UK 10 on every measurement. In a boned twill gown such as the Dandridge, choose UK 10. In a stretch column such as the Lang, choose UK 8.
  • Bust 84 cm, waist 66 cm, low hip 101 cm. UK 8 at the top, UK 10 at the hip. A strapless style fits at the bust, so choose UK 8 in a gown with a flared skirt, and UK 10 in a close column where the hip has to fit.
  • Bust 97 cm, waist 78 cm, low hip 106 cm. Just over UK 12. In a draped one-shoulder style such as the Seldon, UK 12 will fit. In a boned bodice, UK 14 is the safer choice.

Common sizing mistakes

The first is measuring over clothes, which adds a centimetre to every number. The second is using a garment chart as a body chart. The Solace London chart is a body chart, so do not add ease. The third is choosing by dress size alone. A UK 10 at one label is not a UK 10 at another, and this brand’s jump of 5 cm between UK 8 and UK 10 catches people out.

Length and the model

Most Solace London dresses are floor length. The models on the product pages stand between 177 and 182 cm and wear a UK 6, usually in heels. If you are shorter, expect the hem to pool unless you wear a heel of similar height. Many styles have a centre back split, which helps with walking, and a tailor can take up a plain hem without much fuss. Hems on draped and trained styles need a specialist.

Sizing for the occasion

For a black-tie evening where you will be seated for dinner, a sculpting style in your exact size is right. For a wedding with dancing, consider the stretch styles, which move with you. Our guides to Solace London gowns and strapless and one-shoulder styles cover the shapes in more detail, and our quality review explains how each fabric behaves.

If you are still unsure, compare your measurements with a dress you already own that fits well, measured flat and doubled. You can see every size on each product page in the Solace London edit.

Frequently asked questions

Does Solace London run small?

Solace London is mostly true to size, but its boned and minimal-stretch styles fit firmly. On those, the brand suggests taking your usual size and sizing up if you are between sizes. Stretch knit crepe styles fit more easily.

What size is UK 10 in Solace London in US sizes?

A Solace London UK 10 is a US 6 and an EU 38. It fits a 90 cm bust, a 71 cm waist and a 100 cm low hip.

Is Solace London true to size?

Yes, Solace London is true to size on its own body chart, which runs from UK 4 to UK 16. Check the fit note on each style, because the advice for people between sizes changes with the fabric.

What sizes does Solace London come in?

Solace London makes its dresses in UK 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. That is US 0 to 12 and EU 32 to 44.

Should I size up in a strapless Solace London dress?

Only if you are between sizes. Solace London strapless gowns with boned bodices have minimal stretch, so the brand suggests your usual size, sizing up if your bust and waist fall between two sizes.

How tall are the Solace London models?

The models on Solace London product pages stand between 177 and 182 cm and wear a UK 6, usually with a heel. Most dresses are floor length, so shorter wearers should plan for heels and a hem.

Does Solace London run small in the bust?

Not by design, but the bust is the least forgiving measurement on Solace London boned strapless styles. The twill has minimal stretch, and the chart jumps 5 cm at the bust between UK 8 and UK 10. Measure in the bra you will wear and choose by the bust on strapless styles.

Should I size up in a long sleeve Solace London dress?

Usually not. Solace London long sleeves in stretch knit crepe, as on the Olivia, fit in your usual size. On tailored and boned long-sleeved styles with minimal stretch, such as the Martine, size up if you are between sizes and your shoulders and upper arms are your widest point.
