Solace London Dresses by Colour: Black, Red, White, Pink, Green and Blue

Solace London dresses come mainly in solid colours. Black is the largest group, then reds and pinks, then purples and blues, with smaller runs in grey, ivory, metallic gold and green. The brand uses evocative shade names such as ruby, acai, slate blue and dark olive, so read the name as well as the swatch.

Of the 343 Solace London dresses Coveti carries, 108 are black, 58 red, 57 pink, 41 purple and 38 blue. Grey, ivory, metallic, green, beige and a few two-tone styles make up the rest. The brand does almost no print, which is part of its appeal: a plain colour on a strong shape. Here is how each colour family works, with the shade names to look for.

Black Solace London dresses

Black is where most people start, and it is where the brand’s cutting shows most clearly, because nothing distracts from the line. The Kinsley Maxi Dress in Black is a strapless column with a pleated bodice and a wraparound drape, and one of the label’s Icons. Black styles in the edit include the Dandridge, Lang, Olivia, Pieta and Kira.

Black suits black tie, galas and most evening weddings. For daytime religious ceremonies, a colour is the safer choice. See our wider edit of black dresses for other labels.

Red Solace London dresses

The brand’s reds run from bright scarlet to deep ruby, crimson red and plain red. Scarlet and red are bright, true reds; ruby and crimson are deeper and read almost burgundy under low light.

The Britt Maxi Dress in Red is a pleated strapless maxi and one of the brand’s Icons. Red is the strongest choice for a gala, an awards dinner and a winter wedding, and it photographs well at night. For more, see our red dresses and red evening gowns edits.

White and ivory Solace London dresses

Solace London’s pale shades are cream, pearl and alabaster, and many of them sit in the brand’s Bridal range. The Claudette Maxi Dress in Pearl is a pleated strapless, sleeveless maxi. These are bridal colours first. Wear them to your own wedding, a civil ceremony, a summer party where white is the theme. Avoid them as a wedding guest.

White is also the most searched Solace London colour in our keyword data across 17 markets, ahead of pink and black, and Saudi Arabia is its third-largest market for it after the US and the UK. In its own colour filter the brand files its cream styles under white, and its pearl and alabaster styles under ivory.

Our guide to Solace London bridal covers the pale styles in detail, and our white dresses edit has more labels.

Pink Solace London dresses

Pink is the brand’s broadest family, from pale pink, petal pink, powder pink and putty pink to camellia pink, dark rose, berry pink, peony pink and fuchsia. The pale shades suit daytime and spring weddings; the deep ones carry an evening.

The Alessandra Maxi Dress in Powder Pink is a strapless floor-length gown with a contrasting drop waist. Powder pink is soft enough for a garden wedding and strong enough to stand out in a room. See our pink dresses edit for other labels.

Green Solace London dresses

Green is a small family at Solace London, which makes it worth noticing. The shades are sage, chartreuse and dark olive. Sage is pale and grey-toned, chartreuse is bright and acid, dark olive is deep and almost brown.

The Edison Midi Dress in Sage is a strapless midi with a curved boned bodice and laser-cut panels on a flared skirt. The Lang Maxi Dress in Dark Olive is a body-conscious column with a capped sleeve and moulded neckline. Green is an unusual choice for a wedding guest and a good one for autumn. Our green dresses edit has more.

Blue Solace London dresses

The blues include navy, slate blue, light blue, ice blue, arctic blue, soft blue, iris blue and opal. Navy and slate blue are the most versatile, formal enough for black tie and softer than black. Light and ice blues suit summer.

The Dandridge Maxi Dress in Slate Blue has a boned strapless bodice in twill with subtle sheen and a sculpted back. Slate blue is a good answer for anyone who wants a dark colour that is not black. See our blue dresses edit for more.

Purple Solace London dresses

Purple deserves its own mention, with 41 styles in the edit. The shades are acai, deep orchid, damson, plum, grape, raisin, amethyst, aubergine, wisteria, lavender and allium purple. The Imani Maxi Dress in Wisteria is a strapless maxi in a soft lilac that works for spring evenings. Darker purples such as acai and plum are strong for winter. Our purple evening gowns edit has more.

Lilac Solace London dresses

Solace London does not use the word lilac in its product names, but its own colour filter puts lavender and wisteria under lilac. Lavender is a cool, grey-toned lilac; wisteria is a touch pinker. The Lucille Maxi Dress in Lavender is a strapless maxi in 100% polyester, and the Kiki Midaxi Dress in Lavender gives the same shade at a shorter length. Lilac suits spring weddings and daytime receptions, and it is one of the few pale colours that is safe for a wedding guest.

Burgundy Solace London dresses

Burgundy is another word the brand does not use, yet its colour filter files some of its ruby, raisin and plum styles as burgundy. Ruby is the reddest of the three, raisin the most brown, plum the most purple. The Lang Maxi Dress in Ruby is a stretch knit crepe column with a capped sleeve, and the Kira Maxi Dress in Raisin is the one-shoulder maxi in the deepest of the shades. For a covered option, the Sedgewick Maxi Dress in Ruby has long sleeves and a blouson bodice. Burgundy suits winter weddings and the party season.

Grey and metallic Solace London dresses

The grey family is small but useful: pewter, platinum, flint and silver. Metallic gold appears on the Lang, Newman, Florie, Lea, Charo and Swanson. These shades suit New Year’s Eve, galas and evening parties more than weddings. The Pieta in platinum is the clearest example of the grey family, an off-the-shoulder corseted gown in twill with subtle sheen.

Two-tone styles

A few styles break the solid-colour rule. The Arla comes in cream and black, the Lea in soft pink and black, the Lyana in gold and black. They are graphic rather than printed, with blocks of colour that follow the seams. If you love the brand’s lines but want a little more contrast, start there.

How to choose a colour

Start with the event. For black tie, deep shades and black. For daytime, pale ones. For a wedding, anything but the pale bridal shades. Then think about your skin and hair. Warm skin tones tend to suit ruby, acai and dark olive; cool tones suit slate blue, pewter and powder pink. And think about the photographs: bright colours read well at a distance, dark ones flatter in close-up.

Metallic and grey shades need care. Pewter, platinum and silver have sheen and can look pale under a flash. At a wedding, they can come too close to the bride’s colour in pictures.

Colour and fabric

The same shade looks different in different cloths. In heavy satin, a colour looks deeper and shinier; in twill with subtle sheen, it stays crisp; in a stretch knit crepe, it is matte and even. If you are matching a dress to a theme, check the fabric line on the product page as well as the shade name.

Colour and the season

A quick guide to timing. Spring: powder pink, light blue, lavender and sage. Summer: pale pink, lemon, ice blue and bright red. Autumn: dark olive, damson, acai and cocoa. Winter: ruby, crimson red, plum, navy and black. These are tendencies, not rules, and a bright colour in winter can look stronger than any dark one.

Matching shoes and accessories to colour

With a single solid colour, the accessories decide the mood. Black and navy gowns take gold and silver equally well. Reds suit gold and a nude shoe. Pale pinks and blues suit silver and pearl. Purples look rich with gold. A shoe in the exact colour of the gown lengthens the leg, and a metallic sandal works with almost everything in the range.

Shop by colour

All the colours above are on the Solace London brand page, where you can filter by shade. For the gowns by shape, read our Solace London gowns guide, and for dress codes see Solace London wedding guest dresses. The wider maxi dresses category has more colours from other labels.
