Gold Hoop Earrings: How to Choose Size, Gold and Diamonds

Gold hoops are the earrings most of us put on without a second thought, which is exactly why the pair you buy deserves a first one. This guide walks through sizes in millimetres, 14 carat against 18 carat gold, gold-forward against diamond-set, and how to wear each scale. My examples come from the 258 hoops by Suzanne Kalan in our hoop earrings edit, such as the Golden Stacker Mini Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold, around $4,220 at Coveti.

For a first pair of gold hoop earrings, buy 18 carat gold in a small to medium size, roughly 15 to 30 mm across, with a closure that clicks shut firmly. Add diamonds if you want the pair to carry you into the evening, and only size up once you know how much weight your lobes are happy with.

The rest of this guide puts real prices to that advice.

How hoop sizes work in millimetres

Hoops are measured by diameter, usually the outside edge, in millimetres. Two pairs can share a diameter and look nothing alike, because the second number that matters is the thickness of the gold itself. A 20 mm hoop in fine 2 mm wire reads delicate. The same 20 mm in a chunky 5 mm tube reads bold, and it weighs noticeably more on the lobe.

As a working guide, this is how jewellers tend to describe the scales:

Diameter How it is usually described Where it sits
Under 15 mm Huggie Close against the lobe
15 to 20 mm Small Just below the lobe
25 to 40 mm Medium Around the jawline
50 mm and above Large Below the jaw, toward the neck

The easiest way to choose is to find a pair you already own and like, then measure it with a ruler. That single number will save you more returns than any style advice.

Suzanne Kalan names her sizes instead of numbering them. Across the range you will see Mini, Midi, Milli and Mega, and the price climbs with the scale. In the Gilded Diamond design, the Gilded Diamond Mini Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold are around $6,570 at Coveti, the Gilded Diamond Midi Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold around $15,980 and the Gilded Diamond Milli Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold around $25,390. The names are a guide, so check the stated dimensions on each product page before you commit.

14 carat against 18 carat gold

Gold purity is measured in carats out of 24. Eighteen carat gold is 75% pure gold, and 14 carat is 58.5%. The rest is a mix of other metals that adds hardness and sets the colour.

For hoops, the trade-off is simple. Eighteen carat has a deeper, warmer yellow and feels a touch more luxurious against the skin. Fourteen carat is a little harder, so it shrugs off daily knocks well, and it has a slightly paler tone. Neither is wrong. If you want a single pair you never take off, 14 carat is a sensible choice. If colour is your priority, go 18.

Suzanne Kalan works in both. Her Amalfi and Nadima hoops are 14 carat, while Classic, Bold, Golden, Gilded and Shimmer hoops are 18 carat. Each design usually comes in yellow, rose and white gold. White gold is normally rhodium plated for that bright finish, and over the years it may need re-plating. We compare the three colours properly in our guide to white gold, yellow gold and rose gold.

Plain gold, diamond and gemstone hoops

This is the decision that moves the price most, so it is worth being honest about how you will wear them.

Gold-forward hoops

A hoop where the gold does most of the talking is the workhorse. It goes with everything, it never looks overdressed, and it is the easiest pair to replace if you lose one. The most accessible pair in our edit is the Golden Mini Hoops in 18K White Gold, around $2,310 at Coveti. The Gilded designs add character. Their gold is hand-shaped and softly hammered, inspired by earlier eras, and the Mini carries just 0.19 carats of baguette and round diamonds, so the metal stays the star.

Diamond hoops

Diamond hoops are where Suzanne Kalan is at her most recognisable. The Classic Diamond hoops use her Fireworks setting, where baguette diamonds sit at offset, scattered angles so each stone catches light on its own. On a hoop the effect is lively, because the earring moves with your head and the stones flash in turn. If you want the background, our piece on the Fireworks setting and baguette diamond jewellery explains the cut and the setting in detail.

The Classic Diamond Icon Mini Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold carry 0.33 carats of baguette and round diamonds for around $3,930 at Coveti. They make a very good first diamond pair. The Classic Diamond Icon Midi Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold, around $12,450, step up to a full carat. At the top of the range sit the Classic Diamond Milli Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold, around $49,200 at Coveti. With 4.65 carats of baguettes, they are as much diamond as gold.

Gemstone hoops

Colour is the fun part. Amalfi lines baguette gemstones edge to edge, and the rainbow versions run through a whole spectrum of colour. The Amalfi Horizontal Rainbow Midi Hoops in 14K Yellow Gold are around $7,540 at Coveti, and the larger Amalfi Vertical Rainbow Mega Hoops in 14K Yellow Gold around $10,450. Our Suzanne Kalan Amalfi guide covers every colourway.

Nadima mixes cuts of gemstone with round diamonds, and many of its hoops come in ombre gradients. The Nadima Green Ombre Mini Spiral Hoops in 14K Yellow Gold add 0.10 carats of round diamonds to the green stones for around $6,570 at Coveti. They are a lovely way to wear colour at a modest scale.

Reading the product names

Suzanne Kalan hoop names carry a lot of information once you know how to read them. The collection comes first (Classic, Bold, Amalfi), then any design name (Icon, Barbwire, Burst), then the size word, then the gold. Words such as Sideways, Horizontal and Vertical describe how the stones are arranged on the hoop, so look closely at the product photographs to see which way the baguettes run. A horizontal line of stones looks calmer. Vertical stones give more of a ladder effect.

How to wear gold hoops

Start with your daily routine. If you wear glasses, take a lot of calls and tie your hair back, a Mini hoop is the most practical size. It clears the arm of your frames and it will not catch on a scarf.

For several piercings, graduate the sizes so the largest hoop is in the first hole and they get smaller as they climb. A huggie in the second hole and a stud higher up is a classic arrangement. Our huggie earrings guide goes into stacking in detail, and it covers what to put at the top of the ear too.

With a medium hoop, keep the neckline simple. A crew neck, a shirt open at the collar, a strapless dress: all good. With a large hoop, skip the statement necklace altogether and let the earrings do the work. Hair up shows off the full shape of a hoop, while hair down lets just the bottom curve peek through.

Mixing metals is fine. A yellow gold hoop next to a white gold huggie looks deliberate when the pieces share a design language, and Suzanne Kalan makes most designs in all three golds, which makes matching easy.

What to pay for gold hoop earrings

Across the 258 Suzanne Kalan hoops at Coveti, prices run from around $2,310 to around $49,200, with a middle of about $6,570. That spread breaks down into three rough bands.

Under $4,000 you are looking at plain gold and fine-set Mini hoops. The Classic Diamond Thin Mix Mini Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold are around $2,750 at Coveti, and the Bold Barbwire Mini Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold around $3,930.

Between about $5,000 and $15,000 you get the Gilded designs, the larger Amalfi and Nadima hoops and the Midi sizes of the diamond collections. This is the band where most people find their forever pair.

Above $15,000 the hoops become serious diamond pieces. The Classic Diamond Midi Sideways Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold hold 2.18 carats of baguette diamonds for around $19,800 at Coveti, and the Classic Diamond Milli tops the range.

Caring for your hoops

Close the fastening properly every time, and check it now and then, because that is where hoops are lost. Store each pair separately so diamonds do not scratch softer gold. Wipe with a soft cloth after wear.

Know your stones. Diamond is 10 on the Mohs hardness scale and sapphire is 9, so both are tough. Emerald is 7.5 to 8 and more brittle, so avoid knocks and keep emerald hoops out of ultrasonic cleaners. Every Suzanne Kalan piece is handcrafted and made in America, and the house has made jewellery since 1988, so a little care keeps the workmanship looking as it should. FAQ

What size gold hoop earrings should I buy first?

Buy a small to medium pair, about 15 to 30 mm in diameter, for your first gold hoops. That range sits just below the lobe, suits most face shapes and works from the office to dinner. Measure a pair you already own to confirm. In the Suzanne Kalan range at Coveti, the Mini and Midi sizes cover this scale best.

Is 14k gold better than 18k gold for hoop earrings?

Fourteen carat gold is slightly harder, and 18 carat has a richer colour, so the better choice depends on how you wear them. Eighteen carat is 75% gold and 14 carat is 58.5%. For a pair you never take off, 14 carat is practical. For the deepest yellow tone, choose 18 carat. Suzanne Kalan makes hoops in both.

How much do diamond hoop earrings cost?

Suzanne Kalan diamond hoops at Coveti start at around $2,750 and reach around $49,200. The Classic Diamond Thin Mix Mini Hoops sit at the entry point, the Classic Diamond Icon Midi Hoops are around $12,450, and the Classic Diamond Milli Hoops top the range. Price rises with the size of the hoop and the carat weight of diamonds set into it.

What is the difference between hoops and huggies?

A huggie is a small hoop that sits close against the lobe, usually under 15 mm across, while a hoop hangs below it. Huggies feel more like a stud with a curve and are easy to wear daily. Hoops make more of a statement. Many people wear both at once, with the hoop in the first piercing and a huggie above.

Can you wear gold hoops every day?

Yes, solid gold hoops are made for daily wear, especially small sizes in 14 carat gold. Choose a secure fastening, take them off for the gym and swimming, and wipe them clean after wear. Diamond and sapphire hoops are hard-wearing too. Emerald hoops need more care, since emerald is more brittle and should be kept away from knocks.

Are Suzanne Kalan hoops handmade?

Yes, every Suzanne Kalan piece is handcrafted and made in America, according to the brand. The house has made fine jewellery since 1988 and works in solid 14 carat and 18 carat gold. Coveti stocks 258 of its hoops, all 100% authentic, and ships worldwide, with returns handled under the Coveti returns policy.
