Pinstripe Trousers for Women: Cuts, Cloths and Styling
Pinstripe trousers for women are tailored trousers cut from cloth woven with fine, evenly spaced vertical stripes, a pattern borrowed from city suiting that lengthens the leg and gives a plain shape quiet structure. Worn alone they read as smart casual; worn with the matching jacket they become a suit. For the wider tailoring edit, see our guide to women’s pant suits, and for the house behind this edit, our ME+EM trousers and jeans guide.
ME+EM has three new pinstripe pieces arriving on Coveti: a flannel barrel trouser, a jersey straight-leg trouser and a short blazer that matches the first. Below we compare the cloths, the cuts and the ways to wear them.
What makes a good pinstripe
The stripe. A true pinstripe is a single fine line, finer than a chalk stripe, which is softer and wider. The finer the line, the more the trouser reads as plain from a distance and as patterned up close.
The cloth. Flannel has a brushed, slightly hazy surface that blurs the stripe and adds warmth. A smoother cloth keeps the stripe sharp. Jersey tailoring adds stretch and recovery for comfort.
The cut. Vertical stripes exaggerate whatever the leg does. On a barrel leg they curve with the volume; on a straight leg they fall as clean parallel lines.
The three new ME+EM pinstripe pieces
The flannel barrel trouser. The ME+EM Pleated Barrel Trouser in Charcoal/Walnut combines heritage wool tailoring with what the house calls perennial pinstripes. It is crafted from a heritage-inspired flannel wool tailoring fabric with a refined pinstripe and a soft brushed texture, in 100% wool, with pocket linings of recycled polyester. Intelligently placed seams and pleats create volume through the leg, and the relaxed fit with a barrel shape balances structure and softness. It has centre-front pleats, a button and zip opening, functional pockets and a cropped, ankle length. More barrel shapes are in our edit of barrel-leg trousers.
The jersey straight leg. The ME+EM Man Pant in Black is cut from a pinstripe jersey tailoring fabric with good shape retention, which ME+EM describes as heavyweight and soft. The high rise skims the waist and hips, then follows a straight leg, with a tailored crotch, a hook, bar and zip fastening, a woven internal waistband and side pockets. It comes in two lengths. The main fabric is 72% Lenzing Ecovero viscose, 25% recycled polyester and 3% elastane: the version to choose for long days and travel.
The matching short blazer. The ME+EM Icon Oversized Short Blazer in Charcoal/Walnut is the house’s modern take on the heritage pinstripe, a shorter cut of its signature Icon Oversized Blazer in the same brushed flannel-wool tailoring fabric as the barrel trouser, with a versatile Walnut stripe. It is single breasted and intelligently oversized, with an under collar in melton, a hidden button for a high neckline and a hidden internal elastic that keeps pushed-up sleeves in place.

How to wear pinstripe trousers
As a suit. The barrel trouser and the short blazer share a cloth, so they wear as a suit. The short jacket shows the pleats and the curve of the leg, which a long jacket would hide. For more on two-piece tailoring, see our tuxedo suits for women guide.
With fine cashmere. The ME+EM Slim Knit Top in Charcoal Melange is 100% cashmere in a plain jersey stitch, slim fit, with a crew neckline, saddle shoulders and rolled trims. A charcoal knit on a charcoal pinstripe gives a tonal, low-contrast look; the light weight lets it sit under the blazer without bulk. See also our guide to cashmere sweaters for women.
With a shirt-cuff layer. The ME+EM Smart Cuff Layering Top in Light Cream has cotton-poplin deep cuffs and a collar that take cues from classic tux shirting, on a soft cotton jersey body with a half-button placket. Push the blazer sleeves up, where the internal elastic holds them, and let the cuffs show. Our guide to what to wear under a blazer has more layers.
With the right shoe. The ME+EM Point Toe Loafer in Chocolate is designed to peek out of longer hems, which suits the full-length Man Pant. With the cropped barrel trouser, show a little ankle and a sock. A braided belt in Merlot warms the Walnut stripe.
Pinstripe trousers around the world
UK. Pinstripe trousers women is searched about 1,000 times a month in the UK. Flannel wool suits a cold, damp winter in the office and out of it.
US. Americans search pinstripe pants women, about 1,900 times a month. In heated offices, the jersey Man Pant is the practical choice; the flannel suits colder commutes.
EU. In Italy the pinstripe is gessato. A relaxed pinstripe with a fine knit reads as smart city dressing in Milan and Paris.
GCC. Through the cooler months, flannel works for evenings and air-conditioned offices. The full-length straight leg of the Man Pant gives full coverage, with the loafer showing just at the hem.
Frequently asked questions
Are pinstripe trousers still in style?
Pinstripes are a perennial tailoring pattern. Relaxed barrel and straight-leg cuts make them feel current.
What top goes with pinstripe trousers?
A fine knit, a crisp shirt and a jersey layer all work. Keep the top plain so the stripe leads.
Do pinstripes make you look taller?
Vertical stripes draw the eye up and down the leg, which tends to lengthen the line.
Can pinstripe trousers be worn casually?
Yes. Pair them with a cashmere crew and a loafer, and leave the jacket at home.
What is the difference between pinstripe and chalk stripe?
A pinstripe is a fine, sharp line; a chalk stripe is wider and softer, like a line drawn in tailor’s chalk.
Does the ME+EM short blazer match the barrel trouser?
Yes. ME+EM describes both in the same heritage-inspired flannel wool tailoring fabric with a refined pinstripe, in Charcoal/Walnut.
