Brown Knee-High Boots: How to Choose and Wear Them
Brown knee-high boots are leather and suede boots whose shaft finishes just below the knee, in shades from tan and cognac to chocolate, and they are the most versatile tall boot in a winter wardrobe. Start with our edit of designer knee-high boots, then read on for how to choose the leather, the toe, the heel and the shade, and how to wear each one.
The new ME+EM Stretch Knee-High Boot in Tan is the starting point for this guide. ME+EM, the London label Clare Hornby founded in 2009, cuts it in supple stretch lamb Nappa from Italy, with a slim square toe, an inside zip, a low flared block heel and memory foam padding on the insock. It joins the same boot in Black, which is already part of the ME+EM designer boots and accessories on Coveti.
Why brown, and which brown
Black boots close a look; brown boots open it up. A brown leather sits comfortably with navy, grey, camel, cream, olive and denim, which is most of what a cold-weather wardrobe is made of. Think of brown as three families.
Tan and cognac. The lightest browns. They look best against cream, camel and mid-blue denim. The ME+EM Tan and the ATP Atelier Sarconi in Cannella both sit here.
Mid brown. The equestrian shade, close to saddle leather. The Khaite Colt in Vintage Brown, in two-toned baby calfskin tumbled for a broken-in look, and the Gianvito Rossi Santiago 60 in brown leather are good references.
Chocolate and dark brown. The quietest option and the closest to black in how formal it looks. Try the Max Mara Obice in Dark Brown and the Jimmy Choo Amis Knee Boot 35 in chocolate suede. Our guide to chocolate brown outfits shows how to build a whole look around the colour.
How to choose a pair
The leather. Smooth calf holds a crisp shape and polishes well. Nappa is softer and closer to the leg. Stretch Nappa, as on the ME+EM boot, gives through the calf, which helps on a slim leg and over a skinny jean. Suede reads warmer and more tactile, but it needs protection from rain.
The toe. A square toe is the shape of the moment and gives a strong, architectural line. We cover it in depth in our guide to square toe boots. A round toe is the classic riding shape. A pointed toe lengthens the leg under a midi skirt.
The heel. Below 3 cm is a walking boot. Between 4 and 7 cm is the everyday sweet spot, with enough lift for a skirt and enough stability for stairs. Above 7 cm the boot becomes an evening shoe.

How we measured: ME+EM Tan figures come from the ME+EM product page and size guide on meandem.com (composition, fit notes and the size list, where the house shows UK 3 to 9 as EU 36 to 42 with two half sizes). Every other cell comes from the Coveti product record for that boot, read through our public Store API on 31 October 2026. ME+EM leaves the foot length row of its size guide blank, so we do not quote one.
How to wear brown knee-high boots
With a midi skirt. The easiest outfit. Let the hem fall a few centimetres below the top of the boot so no leg shows, and match the tights to the boot for a long, unbroken line.
Over slim jeans. Tuck a slim jean into a stretch boot and add a long coat. A tan boot with mid-blue denim is the most relaxed version; dark brown with black denim is sharper.
Under wide trousers. A close shaft disappears under a wide-leg trouser, so only the square toe shows. Our guide to barrel leg trousers covers the proportions.
With a knit dress. A ribbed jersey dress, a brown boot and a camel coat is a full winter outfit in three pieces. See our sweater dresses guide for the shapes that work.

Brown knee-high boots around the world
United States. Shoppers say tall boots and riding boots as often as knee-high boots. Search demand runs at about 18,100 a month and climbs to around 49,500 in November. In the Northeast and Midwest, smooth leather copes with slush better than suede.
United Kingdom. The biggest market for the term, at about 22,200 searches a month and a November peak near 60,500, with tan knee high boots at about 2,400 a month. Rain is the main enemy, so a protected leather and a rubber-tipped sole earn their keep.
European Union. Sizing is native here, since every boot in our matrix is sized in EU numbers. Look for regional names such as bottes hautes in France and Stiefel in Germany.
GCC. In Dubai, Riyadh and Doha, boots come out from December to February for evenings, travel and air-conditioned interiors. A lower heel and a soft Nappa suit long days indoors, and a tan shade sits well with the lighter palette of the region.
How to care for brown leather boots
ME+EM labels its stretch Nappa boot wipe clean, so use a soft, slightly damp cloth after each wear and let the leather dry naturally, away from radiators. Feed smooth leather with a neutral conditioner a few times a season; a coloured cream can darken a tan boot unevenly. Brush suede with a suede brush and protect it with a spray before the first wear. Store each pair upright with boot shapers, and rest boots for a day between wears.
Frequently asked questions
Are brown knee-high boots still in style?
Yes. This season Coveti carries brown knee-high boots from ME+EM, Gianvito Rossi, Khaite, Max Mara, Toteme and Jimmy Choo, and many of the new shapes favour a square toe and a low, stable heel.
What colour tights go with brown boots?
Match the tights to the boot for the longest line, so chocolate tights with a chocolate boot. With tan boots, a sheer black tight is also smart under a dark skirt.
Is tan harder to wear than dark brown?
Tan is lighter and more casual, so it needs a lighter outfit around it: cream knitwear, camel coats and denim. Dark brown works with almost anything you would wear with black.
How do I size a knee-high boot?
Take your usual EU size. ME+EM sizes its boot from EU 36 to 42 (UK 3 to 9) and cuts two half sizes on its own site, while Coveti lists the whole EU sizes.
Can I wear brown boots with black clothes?
Yes. A dark brown boot with black tailoring looks deliberate, and a tan boot with a black coat gives a warmer, softer contrast than an all-black look.
Leather and suede: which lasts longer?
Smooth leather is easier to clean and copes better with rain. Suede lasts just as long when it is brushed and protected, but it needs more care in wet weather.
