Women’s Pant Suits: How to Choose and Wear a Trouser Suit

0

A women’s pant suit, called a trouser suit in the UK, is a matching jacket and trouser cut from the same fabric. The modern version is softer and longer than the 1980s power suit: a blazer with a strong shoulder and room through the body, worn with a wide-leg, straight-leg and tapered trouser and a fine knit, a tee, a blouse underneath. It has become the most versatile thing in a working wardrobe because the two halves also work apart.

This guide explains how to choose a pant suit by jacket shape, trouser cut and fabric, how a suit should fit, what to wear under it and how to style it for the office, a wedding and the weekend, using ME+EM tailoring as the reference. ME+EM, the London label founded by Clare Hornby in 2009, has built its reputation on exactly this kind of suiting.

Pant suit shapes at a glance

Jacket Pair with Effect
Sharp shoulder, hip length Straight crop, slim crop trouser Classic, structured, office
Oversized, long Wide-leg, very wide trouser Relaxed, modern, weekend
Short, cropped High-waisted wide-leg, barrel trouser Lengthens the leg, petite friendly
Tuxedo, satin lapel Tapered tux trouser Evening, black tie
Waistcoat (no sleeves) Wide-leg trouser Summer suiting, three-piece look

Choose the jacket first

The jacket decides the character of the suit. A sharp shoulder blazer, with a squared, lightly padded shoulder line, is the most polished. The Sharp Shoulder Blazer in Grey Multi ($760) is a 100% wool pinstripe in mixed colours that blend into a neutral grey, with a matching Straight Crop Trouser in Grey Multi ($570) and Slim Crop Trouser in Grey Multi ($570), so you can choose the leg. In a warmer colour, the Sharp Shoulder Short Blazer in Warm Chocolate Brown ($760) pairs with the Icon Trouser in Warm Chocolate Brown ($620).

An oversized blazer is longer and looser, and it suits a wide trouser. The Icon Oversized Blazer in Warm Stone ($760) with the Pleat Wide-Leg Trouser in Warm Stone ($570) is the relaxed, all-neutral suit that has defined the last few seasons. A short blazer, cut to the waist, makes the legs look longer and is the best choice for petite frames: try the Ultra Box Crop Blazer in Charcoal/Cream ($710).

Then the trouser

For a suit you will wear all week, the trouser matters more than the jacket, because it is the half you will repeat. A straight leg is the safest: it falls from the hip and works with flats and heels. A wide leg is more fashionable and more forgiving through the hip, but it needs the right hem length, just skimming the floor over your usual shoe. A tapered leg, narrower at the ankle, suits loafers and shows a boot. ME+EM’s trouser range covers all three, from the Exaggerated Taper Trouser in Black ($570) to the Straight-Leg Trouser in Black ($530) and the Wide-Leg Trouser in Black ($570), so a black blazer can be built into three different suits.

How a pant suit should fit

  • Shoulders: the seam sits at the edge of your shoulder, not beyond it, unless the blazer is deliberately oversized. Shoulders cannot be altered cheaply, so fit these first.
  • Sleeves: end at the wrist bone, so a little of the cuff underneath shows.
  • Buttoned jacket: closes without pulling into an X across the front.
  • Trouser waist: sits at your natural waist and stays there when you sit.
  • Hem: skims the top of the shoe for straight and wide legs, rests at the ankle for crops and tapers.

ME+EM sizes its tailoring on a UK 4 to 18 ladder. Coveti lists the model’s height and size and a centimetre measurement table for every piece; see our ME+EM size guide for the conversion to US and EU sizes.

Fabric: what to buy for which season

Wool and wool blends hold a crease and drape well, and they suit autumn and winter: the wool pinstripe and the Italian wool-blend chocolate suit above are both from the Autumn Winter 2026 collection. For warmer weather, look at linen blends and crepe, which are lighter but still structured. For travel, a pull-on trouser in fluid velour, such as the AM-PM Wide-Leg Trouser in Black ($390), keeps its drape after hours in a suitcase and pairs with a black blazer. Check the care label: most structured blazers are dry clean only, while some crepe trousers can be hand washed.

What to wear under a pant suit

Under a suit, less is more. The four reliable options:

How to style a pant suit for every occasion

The office. Wear the full suit with a shirt and a loafer. Swap the shirt for a knit on Fridays. For more ideas, read our smart casual outfits for women.

A wedding. Choose a colour, not black and not grey: the Icon Oversized Blazer in Blush Pink ($760), the Sharp Shoulder Blazer in Merlot ($810) with the Wide-Leg Trouser in Merlot ($660), and a satin camisole underneath. Add a heel and statement earrings.

Evening. A tuxedo suit, with a satin lapel and a trouser stripe, is the evening alternative to a gown. Read our full guide to tuxedo suits for women.

The weekend. Break the suit up. Wear the blazer over jeans, and the trouser with a knit and trainers. The Tailored Barrel Jean in Authentic Dark Wash ($450) takes a sharp blazer well.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a pant suit and a trouser suit?

Nothing. Pant suit is the American term and trouser suit the British term for a matching jacket and trouser in the same fabric.

What do you wear under a women’s pant suit?

A fine knit, a blouse, a crisp shirt and a plain tee all work. Keep the top slim so the jacket sits flat.

What shoes go with a pant suit?

Loafers and pointed flats for the office, a pointed heel for evening and weddings, and clean trainers for the weekend. Hem the trouser to the shoe you will wear most.

Can you wear a pant suit to a wedding?

Yes. Choose a colour such as pink, merlot and pale stone, wear a satin camisole underneath and add a heel. Avoid white and ivory.

How should a women’s blazer fit?

The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, the sleeve should end at the wrist bone and the jacket should button without pulling.

How much is a ME+EM suit?

On Coveti, a ME+EM blazer costs about $710 to $840 and a matching trouser about $530 to $660, so a full suit costs roughly $1,240 to $1,500.
