Boucle Jackets: How to Choose and Style Boucle

0

A boucle jacket is a jacket woven from boucle yarn, a looped, curled yarn that gives the cloth a nubbly, tactile surface, and it is usually cut short and collarless with a trim along the edges. It reads polished and soft at once, which is why it works over jeans as easily as over a dress. Browse our tweed and boucle jackets as you read.

The new ME+EM Straight Crop Jacket in Black is the reference piece for this guide. ME+EM, the London label Clare Hornby founded in 2009, cuts it from a pure wool outerwear fabric with a short-pile boucle finish that has the look and feel of boiled wool. Contrast cotton binding traces the edges, with patch pockets, a collar and gold-toned buttons. See it beside the rest of the label’s tailoring in our edit of ME+EM coats, jackets and blazers.

What boucle is

The word comes from the French for curled. Boucle yarn is spun with loops along its length, and when it is woven, those loops sit on the surface as small rounded nubs. The cloth can be dense and structured, as on a wool outerwear boucle, and it can be open and airy, as on a cotton fantasy boucle shot through with metallic thread.

Fibre changes the character. Wool boucle is warm, springy and holds a shape, so it suits jackets meant to be worn through winter. Cotton and viscose boucle are lighter, with more drape and a dry hand. Silk and metallic fibres add sheen for evening.

Boucle and tweed: the difference

Tweed is a family of woollen cloths, traditionally a firm twill in mixed colours. Boucle describes the yarn, not the weave. Many jackets sold as tweed are in fact woven with boucle yarns, which is why the two words are often paired, as on the Oscar de la Renta Boucle Tweed Jacket in Navy. A true boucle surface is rounder and softer to the touch than a classic tweed. Our guide to the best tweed jackets for women covers the tweed side in detail.

How to choose a boucle jacket

The fibre. For a jacket you will wear as outerwear on mild days, choose wool. For a jacket worn indoors over knitwear and dresses, cotton blends are lighter.

The length. A cropped jacket that stops at the waist suits high-waisted trousers, full skirts and dresses. A longer cut is easier over jeans. See our guide to cropped blazers for how short tailoring balances a look.

The edges. Binding, fringe and braid define the outline. A contrast binding, as on the ME+EM jacket, sharpens the shape. Fringed edges, as on the Max Mara Vento Wool Blend Boucle Boxy Jacket in Brown, soften it.

The neckline. Collarless and crew-neck jackets frame a necklace. A collar, as on the ME+EM and the Versace Cropped Wool Boucle Blouson in Grey, makes the jacket feel closer to outerwear.

How we measured: The ME+EM row comes from the ME+EM product page on meandem.com: composition, fit notes and the centimetre size chart, where front length runs from 47 cm at UK 4 to 57 cm at UK 18 and bust from 88 cm to 122 cm. Every other row comes from each jacket’s Coveti product record, read through our public Store API on 31 October 2026, with UK sizes as listed on Coveti.

How to style a boucle jacket

With straight jeans. The most modern way to wear boucle. A black jacket, a white tee and mid-blue denim takes the formality out of the cloth. Add a loafer for day.

With tailored trousers. Pair the ME+EM jacket with the new Slim Crop Tux Trouser in Black for a black suit with texture, and a fine knit underneath.

With a full skirt. A cropped jacket over the ME+EM Full-Length Skirt in Black balances volume below with a short line above. It works for evening with a heel.

Head to toe in boucle. ME+EM also cuts boucle into dresses, including the Boucle Jersey Fit + Flare Midi Dress in Black. Wear it with a plain wool coat so the texture has room. Our guide to wool coats for women has options.

Boucle jackets around the world

United Kingdom. The strongest market for the term, with search demand between about 4,400 and 6,800 a month. A wool boucle jacket is a practical layer for a British autumn, worn over knitwear under a coat.

United States. About 1,600 searches a month, with the spelling boucle and the phrase tweed jacket used side by side. Cotton blends suit the warmer South, wool the Northeast.

European Union. The French name is the source of the term, and Paris remains its home. Global search demand is around 11,000 a month, and keyword difficulty sits at zero, so few pages answer the question well.

GCC. A cotton and viscose boucle is a smart layer for air-conditioned offices and winter evenings in Dubai and Riyadh. Ivory and navy jackets sit well over long dresses and wide trousers.

How to care for boucle

ME+EM marks the Straight Crop Jacket dry clean, and most wool boucle should be treated the same way. The loops catch, so keep the jacket away from hook fastenings, rough bag straps and jewellery with claws. If a loop pulls, ease it back to the inside with a blunt needle; never cut it. Steam rather than press, which can flatten the pile. Hang the jacket on a shaped hanger and give it a day off between wears. ME+EM says the wool in this jacket is RWS certified and mulesing free.

Frequently asked questions

Is a boucle jacket formal?

It can be both. With tailored trousers and a heel it is formal; with straight jeans and a loafer it is relaxed. The cloth adapts to what you wear with it.

Is boucle warm enough for winter?

Wool boucle is warm and dense, especially a short-pile outerwear boucle like the ME+EM fabric. Cotton boucle is a lighter, indoor layer.

Does boucle pill?

Looped yarns can catch and fuzz with friction. Keep the jacket away from rough straps, and remove surface fuzz with a fabric comb.

What do I wear under a boucle jacket?

A fine knit, a silk camisole and a white tee all work. Our guide to what to wear under a blazer applies just as well to boucle.

How should a cropped boucle jacket fit?

It should close comfortably over a fine knit and finish at the natural waist. The ME+EM jacket measures 50 cm in front length at UK 8.

Can I wear a boucle jacket with jeans?

Yes. Straight and wide jeans in mid-blue and black make boucle feel easy and current.
