Women’s Waistcoats: Halterneck, Tailored and Knit
A women’s waistcoat is a sleeveless, close-fitting layer that buttons down the front and finishes around the waist, cut to sit over a shirt, under a jacket and, increasingly, on its own as a top. In tailoring it is the third piece of a three-piece suit, and our guide to women’s pant suits shows how it completes the jacket and trouser. ME+EM has a new halterneck waistcoat and a new knit vest arriving on Coveti.
This guide explains the main waistcoat shapes, what makes a good one in hand, how the new ME+EM pieces are built and which trousers turn a waistcoat into a suit for the party season.
The three waistcoat shapes
The tailored waistcoat. Cut from suiting cloth with a V neck, a buttoned front and a back panel, it is made to wear under a jacket. Look for a front that lies flat with no pull at the buttons.
The halterneck waistcoat. The neckline climbs to fasten behind the neck and the back is cut away. It is a waistcoat made to be seen, worn alone with tailored trousers for evening.
The knitted vest. Softer and warmer, it layers over shirts and under coats. Button-through versions open for coverage and close for warmth, as our guide to wearing a knitted vest explains.
What makes a good waistcoat
Structure. A waistcoat worn alone needs a fabric with body, so it holds a clean line instead of creasing at the waist.
Fit at the back. An adjuster at the back lets you take the waist in after you have chosen your size, which is the closest thing to tailoring off the rail.
Lining. A smooth lining helps the waistcoat move over a shirt and feels cool against bare skin when it is worn as a top.
Buttons and length. The front should close without gaping between buttons, and the hem should meet the waistband of your trousers.
The ME+EM halterneck waistcoat
The ME+EM Halterneck Waistcoat in Black is the house’s after-dark take on the tailored staple. It is cut from a heavyweight, double-bonded satin-back crepe, a structured cloth that the house says holds its shape. The main fabric is 77% triacetate and 23% polyester, with a 100% viscose lining.
The design has a halter neckline, a low back and a button-down front, and an adjustable back tab gives a tailored-to-you fit at the waist. ME+EM states it fits true to size. This is the piece that answers the halter vest top search: a waistcoat built as a top in its own right. Our evening tops guide has more shapes for the season.
The ME+EM button front knit vest
The ME+EM Button Front Knit Vest in Camel Melange brings texture where the halterneck brings polish. It is knitted from an alpaca blend, 63% alpaca and 37% recycled polyester, which the house describes as supersoft with a fluffy texture, in a midweight plain jersey stitch. The Camel Melange colourway gives a two-tone surface.
It has a straight fit, a crew neckline, a centre-front button-through fastening, a standard body length and a level hem. The sleeveless cut slots over shirts, and the button-down front allows for custom coverage. For collar and cuff combinations, see our guide to layering a shirt under a jumper.
Turning a waistcoat into a suit
The braces trouser. The ME+EM Braces Pant in Black is a wool-blend tailored trouser in the house’s wide-leg shape, with a double pleat, button-detachable shoulder braces and inner cuff buttons that lift the hem for a puddle-proof finish. With the halterneck waistcoat it makes a black evening suit with a menswear accent.
The velvet trouser. The ME+EM Wide-Leg Trouser in Black is cut in velvet of 82% viscose and 18% silk, with a fitted waist and a fluid wide leg that drapes over shoes. It comes in two lengths. Crepe above and velvet below gives two textures in one colour. See our ME+EM velvet guide for more of the fabric.
Other pairings. A waistcoat with striped tailoring reads sharper still, as our pinstripe trousers for women guide shows, and the full black-tie version is in our tuxedo suits for women edit.

Waistcoats around the world
UK. Womens waistcoat is searched around 12,100 times a month. In Britain the word means the tailored piece, and a waistcoat suit is a confident choice for winter weddings and the office party.
US. Around 2,900 monthly searches, since Americans usually say vest. Halter vest top adds about 720. In heated interiors a halterneck waistcoat on its own suits the cocktail hour, with a coat over it outside.
EU. In France and Italy the piece is called a gilet. Black crepe and velvet sit well with the restrained evening dressing of Paris and Milan.
GCC. For evenings in Dubai, Riyadh and Doha, wear the halterneck over a fine long-sleeved top for more coverage, and add the velvet trouser for a full-length line in air-conditioned rooms.
Frequently asked questions
What is a women’s waistcoat?
A sleeveless, close-fitting layer that buttons down the front, worn under a jacket, over a shirt, and also alone as a top.
What is the difference between a waistcoat and a vest?
In British English a waistcoat is the tailored piece and a vest is an undershirt. In American English vest means the waistcoat.
Can you wear a waistcoat on its own?
Yes. A halterneck style like the ME+EM waistcoat is designed to be worn as a top, with tailored trousers.
How should a waistcoat fit?
Close at the waist with no pull across the buttons, and long enough to meet the trouser waistband. The ME+EM halterneck has an adjustable back tab.
What do you wear under a knit vest?
A crisp shirt, a fine roll neck and a long-sleeved T-shirt all work. Our what to wear under a blazer guide covers similar layers.
Is a waistcoat suit appropriate for a Christmas party?
Yes. A black waistcoat with velvet trousers is a polished alternative to a dress, as in our Christmas party outfits edit.
How we measured: fabrics, linings, fastenings, fit notes, sizes and country of manufacture come from the four ME+EM product pages; we did not re-measure the garments, and nothing in the matrix is estimated. Read our editorial policy.
