Totême twisted seam jeans: the first Totême jean, and how to size it

The twisted seam jean was the first style in the Totême denim collection and the house still calls it a signature. Shop the Totême collection at Coveti, browse every label in designer jeans and read the jeans and denim guide next. The idea is in the name: the side seams are cut to turn slightly around the leg instead of running straight down it, which gives the jean a little movement and a relaxed, straight-tapered shape. It comes in an ankle-length cut and a full-length cut with a dropped rise that sits on the hips, in 100% organic cotton denim, in washes from rinsed indigo to worn blue, mid grey, off-white and raw. 8 pairs on Coveti, $403 to $640, median $441. This page is how it fits and which size to take.

Key facts

  • 8 pairs on Coveti, $403 to $640, median $441
  • The first style in the Totême denim collection; directional side seams that twist around the leg
  • Two cuts: ankle length, relaxed and straight-tapered; full length, low on the hip with a dropped rise and a straight leg
  • 100% organic cotton denim (GOTS certified on the full-length rinsed blue)
  • Sizing in waist inches, 23 to 32; the brand says true to size for the relaxed look, one size down, even two, for a closer, higher waist
  • Care: 30 degree machine wash, delicate cycle on the full length

What the twisted seam does

On a standard jean the side seam runs straight from hip to hem. Here it is cut to curve forward as it goes down, so the leg twists very slightly. Standing still you barely see it; walking, the leg moves and falls with a soft turn, and the hem breaks a little off-centre over the shoe. It also stops the jean from looking stiff when it is new.

The ankle-length twisted seam

The original shape: relaxed through the hip, straight and slightly tapered to an ankle-length hem. The brand calls it a versatile wardrobe piece, and it is the cut to wear with a loafer, a flat and a low boot, where the ankle shows.

The full-length twisted seam

Designed to sit on the hips with a dropped rise, a relaxed fit and full-length straight legs. The brand is direct about sizing on this one: true to size for the relaxed, low look, and one size down, even two, for a cleaner, higher-waisted fit. The rinsed blue is a Garderob indigo wash.

The washes

Rinsed and washed blue for the deepest indigo, worn blue for a broken-in mid wash, mid grey, off-white and raw. Raw denim has not been washed after dyeing, so it is the darkest and stiffest at first and will mark and fade to your own wear.

How to wear them

With a tucked shirt and a slim belt, with a fine knit and a long coat, with a rib tank in summer. The denim guide has the other house cuts, and the belts page the slim trouser belt they are made for.
