Totême belts: the slim trouser belt, the croco and suede belts and the chain belts

Totême cuts its trousers to be belted, so the belts are narrow, plain and made to sit in a trouser loop rather than over a coat. There are two families. The leather belts are the slim trouser belt in smooth, grained and croco-embossed leather, the thin suede belt and the double clasp belt, most of them made in Italy with a small metal buckle. The chain belts sit in the jewellery line: the Byzantine belt and the Pebble belt in recycled brass plated with gold. 12 belts on Coveti, $520 to $2,420, median $550. This page is each one, how the sizes work and what to wear it with.

  • Strap widths run 1.5 cm on the slim and thin belts and 2.5 cm on the grained trouser belt

The slim trouser belt

The everyday belt: a narrow leather strap with a small buckle, made to thread through tailored trousers and denim. It comes in smooth black leather, grained black and tan leather and croco-embossed black and chocolate. The strap is 1.5 cm wide on the smooth and croco versions and 2.5 cm on the grained one, and most state they are made in Italy.

The thin suede belt and the double clasp belt

The thin suede belt is the softest of the group, 1.5 cm wide with a silver-tone buckle. The double clasp belt closes with two clasps instead of a pin, in croco-embossed leather, and adjusts rather than coming in sizes.

The chain belts

These sit closer to jewellery than to leather goods. The Byzantine belt is a recycled brass chain with 24kt gold plating and a lobster clasp, sized XS/S and M/L. The Pebble belt is brass plated with recycled 18kt gold, adjustable, about 84 cm long. Both are made in Italy and worn low on the hips over a knit dress as easily as through a trouser.

How the sizes work

The leather belts are sized by length in centimetres: 70, 80 and 90. Measure around the trousers you will wear the belt with, at the loops, and take the nearest size. The chain belts are one size, adjustable, except the Byzantine, which uses the house’s paired XS/S and M/L scale.

How to wear them

Through a pleated wool trouser with a tucked shirt, through straight denim with a knit, and cinched over a long cardigan. Match the buckle to the bag hardware and keep it the only metal. The trousers and denim pages show the cuts they are made for.

“The Totême woman doesn’t like to swap her style or wardrobe each season, she has a certain uniform that she sticks to. But then everyone wants something unique and new each season, and so does the Totême woman,” Elin Kling told WWD when the house took on Altor as a minority investor in 2021.
