Saiid Kobeisy real vs fake: six checks, and what a dupe is worth

Saiid Kobeisy is copied the way every red-carpet house is copied: a photograph of a cape gown on Jennifer Lopez becomes, within weeks, a listing on a marketplace at a tenth of the price. The copies are not hard to spot once you know what the real thing is made of, and this page gives the six checks Coveti’s own authentication uses, in order of how quickly they settle the question. It also says what a “dupe” is worth, because a dress inspired by a Kobeisy cape is a different thing from a dress pretending to be one.

“Saiid Kobeisy’s ethereal creations travel to more than 35 countries and are displayed in over 130 points of sale,” the house writes against 2017 on its timeline, and against 2019: “Saiid Kobeisy expands their online presence by joining Farfetch.”

1. The label and the size tag

The woven label reads SAIID KOBEISY and the size is European, 34 to 48. A label reading “Saiid Kobeisy Couture” on a ready-to-wear piece, a US size tag, a made-in label from a country the house has never mentioned: each is a warning. The house does not publish a care label online, so a missing care label is not by itself proof of anything, but a care label in a language the house does not trade in is.

2. The embroidery on the reverse

Turn the piece inside out. On a real Saiid Kobeisy the embroidery, the beading and the crystal are stitched through the fabric and the reverse is backed and tidy, because the piece is cut to be worn against the skin under a lining. On a copy the “embroidery” is often printed, the beads are glued and the reverse is a lattice of loose thread. This check settles most cases on its own.

3. The cape and the bow

The house’s signature is also its best authentication: the cape is cut into the dress at the shoulder seam and falls from it, and the bows are built into the pattern. A cape attached with a hook, a bow on a pin, a “detachable” cape on a style the house sells as one piece, are copies. The cape dresses page shows how the real ones fall.

4. The fabric

The house works in a heavy evening crepe that holds a column, a fine tulle that takes embroidery, a crisp taffeta, a dense brocade and a soft velvet. Copies are made in whatever is cheapest that photographs alike, which means a thin polyester crepe, a stiff nylon tulle and a taffeta that creases into paper. Weight is the tell: a real crepe column has weight in the hand.

5. The seller

The house sells through its own showrooms in Beirut, Dubai, Riyadh and Paris, through Saiid Kobeisy Online, through Farfetch, through its trunk-show boutiques and through stockists such as Coveti. A marketplace seller with no returns, a social-media account selling “Saiid Kobeisy inspired” pieces, a website with the house’s photographs and its own prices: none of these is the house. 6. The price

At Coveti the current-season embroidered gowns sit around $4,180 at the median and the older seasons lower, for the reasons the sale page explains. A current-season embroidered gown offered at $300 is a copy. An older-season crepe dress at $400 from an authenticated stockist is a bargain. The difference is the seller and the season, and both are checkable.

On dupes

A dress inspired by a Saiid Kobeisy cape is not a fake; it is a different dress, and there are honest ones at every price. The line is the name. A piece sold as Saiid Kobeisy that was not made by the house is a counterfeit, whatever it costs, and it will not have the cut. If you want the silhouette without the price, buy the older seasons at Coveti, where the cape is the house’s own.
