Polène Neyu Review: Size, Strap and Neyu vs Osmo Compared

The Polène Neyu is a long east-west shoulder bag of 40 x 15 x 8 cm, weighing 350 g, cut from smooth full-grain Dutch nappa calf with an Italian suede interior and a zip set on the back of the bag. Its strap adjusts from 61 to 85 cm, so it sits snugly under the arm when short and drops to the hip when long. It is the lightest way to carry a full day’s essentials in Polène leather, from the Paris house founded in 2016 by Antoine, Mathieu and Elsa Mothay.

This guide covers what fits, how the strap behaves, the colours and how it compares with the Osmo and the Numéro Neuf East West. For the wider family of shapes, our guide to Polène shoulder bags is a useful companion.

What the Neyu is

The Neyu is a slim, stretched shape: much wider than it is tall, with softly rounded ends and a clean front panel. The most distinctive detail is the closure. Instead of a flap at the top, the zip runs along the back, so the face of the bag is uninterrupted leather and the opening sits against your body when worn. That is a small but real advantage on a busy platform, since nobody can see the zip, let alone reach it.

Like the house’s other leather bags, the Neyu is made by artisans in Ubrique, Andalusia, using leather from certified European tanneries. Our feature on where Polène bags are made covers the workshops in more depth.

Dutch nappa and a suede interior

The outside is smooth full-grain Dutch nappa calf, the same soft leather as the Osmo. It has a fine, slightly shiny texture and a supple hand, and because Polène processes it very little, you may notice a touch of natural roughness up close. It feels like hide rather than a coated surface.

Inside, the Italian suede lining is a pleasure to reach into and stops keys from rattling. Nappa this soft means the Neyu relaxes into a gentle curve against the body when it is not packed tight; it never looks rigid. If you want a bag that keeps a firm outline, the textured calf models are better suited. Our Polène leather guide explains how nappa, smooth calf and textured calf differ in wear.

Neyu size: what fits inside

At 40 cm across, the Neyu is long enough for things a small bag refuses. On a typical day mine held:

  • a large smartphone and a slim cardholder
  • keys, a lipstick and a pair of sunglasses in a soft pouch
  • a compact folding umbrella, laid lengthways
  • a small paperback

With a height of 15 cm and depth of 8 cm, an A4 notebook will not fit, and neither will a laptop. A slim water bottle goes in only if you leave the umbrella out. At 350 g empty, it is lighter than many bags half its length, which matters when you wear it all day. Our Polène bag sizes guide sets these numbers against the rest of the range, and if you need room for a laptop, the Polène work bag guide is the place to look.

The strap range: 61 to 85 cm

The strap adjusts between 61 and 85 cm. At the shortest setting, the Neyu tucks under the arm like a long baguette; at the longest, it hangs at the hip over a coat. It is not long enough to wear across the body on most people, so think of it as a shoulder bag first. Short suits the office; lengthened, it sits over a heavier weekend jacket.

Neyu vs Osmo vs Numéro Neuf East West

All three are shoulder bags, but they solve different problems.

Model Width Weight Closure Leather
Neyu 40 cm (40 x 15 x 8 cm) 350 g Zip on the back Dutch nappa, Italian suede inside
Osmo 25.5 cm (25.5 x 12 x 5.5 cm) 380 g Magnetic flap Dutch nappa inside and out
Numéro Neuf East West 32 cm 540 g Zip Calf, smooth and textured editions

The Osmo shares the Neyu’s nappa but is far smaller, built from interlocking leather modules with a magnetic flap. It is the choice for evenings and light days; the Osmo in Cognac Bag and Osmo in Black Bag are good references, and our Osmo guide covers it in full.

The Numéro Neuf East West is heavier and more structured, with the house’s signature curves and a deeper body. Look at the Numéro Neuf East West in Black Bag, the Numéro Neuf East West in Camel Bag, the Numéro Neuf East West in Taupe Bag and the Numéro Neuf East West in Textured Glade Bag for a textured option. Our Numéro Neuf guide compares its sizes.

My verdict: choose the Neyu if you want the most length for the least weight, the Osmo if you carry very little, and the Numéro Neuf East West if you prefer a bag that stands up on its own. If you want a much bigger soft shoulder shape, the slouchy Shuldo in Ebony Bag is the next step up; see our Shuldo guide. For a rounder hobo in the middle, the Nodde Hobo in Black Bag has a 52 to 105 cm strap.

Neyu colours

The Neyu comes in soft neutrals that show off the sheen of the nappa. The Neyu in Black Bag is the practical daily option, and our guide to black Polène bags compares it with the house’s other black pieces. The Neyu in Cognac Bag is the warmest, and it deepens nicely with use.

For lighter tones, the Neyu in Taupe Bag is a quiet grey-brown that works with navy, camel and black, and it pairs well with a smaller Osmo in Taupe Bag for evenings. The Neyu in Beige Bag and the off-white Neyu in Chalk Bag are lovely in spring and summer, though, as Polène notes, new dark clothing can transfer dye to pale leather. The Polène bags by colour guide shows how these shades sit across other models.

How to wear the Neyu

The long horizontal line looks best against clean shapes. Worn short under the arm with a fine-gauge knit and straight trousers, the Neyu runs along the ribs and draws the eye across, which balances wide-leg tailoring well. With a trench, lengthen the strap so it sits at the hip below the belt.

For work, it holds everything except the laptop, so pair it with a tote and carry the Neyu alone at lunch. In the evening, the chalk shade looks smart with black, and cognac warms up grey. More long shapes are gathered in the shoulder bags edit, and our small hobo bags guide covers softer alternatives.

Caring for the Neyu

Polène says the leather needs little maintenance. Avoid long exposure to strong light, heat, water, grease and perfume. If the bag gets wet, dab it with a soft cloth and let it air dry; no cream is needed. Do not overfill it, store it in its dust bag, and remember that Polène offers a repair service at cost.

Neyu around the world

United States

The US leads interest in the Neyu. The brand lists boutiques in New York on Broadway and in SoHo, and a space on Oak Street in Chicago has been leased. The hidden back zip is reassuring on the subway.

United Kingdom

The brand lists a boutique in London. In a wet British autumn, carry the Neyu under the arm with the zip against you, and dab off rain when you get home.

France, Germany and Europe

In Paris, the brand lists its flagship on Rue de Richelieu and a boutique on the Champs-Élysées. It also lists boutiques in Hamburg on Neuer Wall, Milan on Via Manzoni and Copenhagen. Germany and Spain are strong Neyu markets; in a Spanish summer the beige and chalk shades feel right.

Japan

The brand lists a Tokyo boutique in Minami-Aoyama, its first in Asia, opened in 2023. The Neyu’s light weight suits long days on the train, and its minimal branding fits the city’s restrained style.

Australia and Canada

The brand does not list boutiques in either country. In Australia, the light shades work from October to March; in Canada, black and cognac sit well over winter coats, with the strap at full length.
