Polène Leather Guide: Is Polène Real Leather? Quality and Care

Yes, Polène bags are made of real leather: full-grain calf sourced from certified European tanneries, mostly textured and smooth Italian calf, with smooth Dutch nappa on soft models such as the Osmo and Neyu and textured Spanish calf on the Shuldo and Boky. The bags are cut and hand-finished by leather artisans in Ubrique, Spain, and need very little care beyond keeping them away from light, heat, water, grease and perfume.

Polène is the Paris house founded in 2016 by Antoine Mothay with his siblings Mathieu and Elsa, and the idea traces back to a visit to a Spanish leather workshop in 2014. For the full story of the workshops, read our piece on where Polène bags are made; this guide is about the leathers themselves and how to look after each one.

Is Polène real leather?

It is. Every Polène leather bag uses full-grain calf, the top layer of the hide with its natural surface intact, rather than corrected leather. Polène describes its leathers as certified, meaning they come from certified European tanneries, with Italian, Spanish and Dutch calf depending on the model. The signature folds are held by hand stitching in Ubrique, Andalusia.

A few pieces mix in other materials on purpose. The Tsubi pairs certified-organic raffia from Madagascar with smooth Italian calf, the Ilo is cotton canvas trimmed in smooth calf, and the Solé is woven from pebble-pearls made in France from upcycled leather offcuts. Those are design choices, not shortcuts, and they are covered in our Polène woven bags guide.

The Polène leathers, one by one

Textured full-grain Italian calf

This is the house leather most people picture: a fine, pebbled grain that softens light and hides small scratches. It is used on the Cyme, the textured Numéro Un and the textured Numéro Dix. Feel the Cyme in Textured Cognac next to a smooth bag and the grain is obvious; the same goes for the Numéro Dix in Textured Camel and the Numéro Un Nano in Textured Black. The large Cyme Tote in Camel is textured too, which matters on a bag that lives on office floors.

Smooth full-grain Italian calf

Smooth calf has a cleaner, slightly reflective surface that makes the folds look crisp. The Numéro Un comes in both smooth and textured calf, as on the Numéro Un in Camel. The Nodde family is smooth Italian calf with an Italian suede interior: the Nodde in Cognac and the Nodde Hobo in Cognac are good examples. Smooth calf tends to show a fingernail mark sooner than textured.

Smooth full-grain Dutch nappa calf

Nappa is the softest Polène leather, with a fine, slightly shiny texture. Polène says it undergoes very little processing, so a little natural roughness may show, a sign of a lightly processed hide. The Osmo in Cognac uses Dutch nappa inside and out, and the Osmo in Chalk shows how creamy it looks in a pale shade. The long Neyu in Taupe pairs nappa with an Italian suede interior. More in our Osmo guide.

Textured full-grain Spanish calf

The Shuldo and Boky use a textured Spanish calf with a suede lining. On the Shuldo in Brown, a 49 x 56 x 10 cm hobo at 980 g, the grain gives a big slouchy bag some backbone. The Boky in Textured Camel uses it across three assembled pouches. Our Shuldo guide covers how that leather slouches over time.

Seasonal merino wool and shearling

Polène also brings out seasonal editions in merino wool and shearling. They are cold-weather pieces, so follow the care notes on each one rather than treating them like calf.

Linings: what is inside a Polène bag

The lining tells you a lot about how a bag is meant to be used. Polène uses three main types:

  • Cotton twill on the Numéro Un and Béri Lif: hard-wearing and easy to wipe.
  • Velvet microfibre on the Cyme, Cyme Tote and Tonca: plush and quiet, kind to sunglasses and phone screens.
  • Suede, Italian suede on the Nodde, Neyu, Numéro Sept and Shuldo, and suede on the Boky: soft and luxurious, best kept away from leaking pens.

The Osmo is the exception, Dutch nappa inside and out, with a leather patch pocket. The Tonca in Chalk shows the velvet microfibre lining at its most practical, behind a magnetic flap and a gold-plated stainless steel buckle.

How Polène leather ages

Textured Italian and Spanish calf age slowly and evenly; the grain hides wear, so a bag looks much the same after a year of commuting. Smooth calf tends to soften where your hand holds it. Dutch nappa is the softest from the start, so the Osmo and Neyu feel broken in almost immediately. Pale shades such as Chalk show dye transfer from dark and new clothes, raw denim especially, so they ask for a bit more attention.

The upcycled and natural materials change in their own way. Solé pebble-pearls each have random marbling and, when new, smell strongly of leather; Polène suggests airing the Solé in Tan out of its dust bag for the first few uses and never spraying scent on it. The Nomad Solé in Tan is made in Madagascar with pearls made in France. Raffia on the Tsubi in Natural is fragile and changes over time, and the cotton canvas of the Ilo in Sand is water-repellent but should never go in the washing machine.

Polène leather care, per the brand

Polène’s own guidance is short:

  • Keep the bag out of prolonged light and heat.
  • Avoid water, grease and perfume.
  • If it gets wet, dab it with a soft cloth and let it air dry. No cream is needed.
  • Watch for dye transfer from dark and new clothes.
  • Do not overfill it, and store it in its dust bag.

For raffia, avoid rubbing, light, heat and water. For canvas, do not machine wash, tumble dry, iron, nor rub at stains. Small leather goods follow the same rules; the Kayé Card Holder in Textured Black is as easy to live with as the bags. Our Polène review covers how the leather has held up in daily use.

Repairs and leather quality

Polène offers a repair service at cost, which is the clearest signal of how long it expects a bag to last. Full-grain calf, hand-stitched folds and certified tanneries put Polène in serious company; we look at that question in is Polène a luxury brand, and compare the leatherwork in DeMellier vs Polène. Polène leather around the world

United States

The brand lists boutiques in New York on Broadway and in SoHo, with a Chicago space on Oak Street leased. In humid summers, keep nappa bags like the Osmo out of hot cars.

United Kingdom

With a London boutique and plenty of rain, textured calf is the easy choice; dab off showers and let the bag dry naturally, no cream.

France

Paris has the Rue de Richelieu flagship and a boutique on the Champs-Élysées, the best places to feel the leathers side by side.

Germany and Europe

The brand lists boutiques in Hamburg on Neuer Wall, Milan on Via Manzoni, and Copenhagen. Cold winters are when the merino and shearling editions make sense.

Japan

Tokyo’s Minami-Aoyama boutique opened in 2023 as the first in Asia. In the humid rainy season, store suede-lined bags like the Shuldo in their dust bags with space around them.

Australia and Canada

Australia’s strong sun calls for keeping pale smooth leathers out of direct light. In Canada, dab snow off quickly and let the bag dry away from radiators.
